CRAFTSMAN TOOL NIGHT AT MADERA SPEEDWAY THIS SATURDAYMADERA SPEEDWAY
Date: 06/04/2008
This Saturday will also be Moo Moo Skirt Night! Special activities include a Moo Moo Skirt contest in which the winner will be bestowed the honor of the night’s trophy presenter. As an incentive for fans to dig deep into that storage trunk in the back of the closet, anyone showing up this Saturday wearing a moo moo skirt will get into Madera Speedway for only five bucks.
Madera Speedway continues to be a proving ground for hot young racing talent. Last season Mark Holeman, age 22 of Los Altos, Ross Strmiska, age 21 of Stockton and Trevor Schlundt, age 18 of Clovis, finished 1-2-3 in the track championship battle. Holeman and Strmiska also finished 1-2 in the 2007 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Driver Standings for the State of California.
In 2008 another Madera “Young Gun” has emerged in the Western Late Model division. Kyle Gottula, age 21 of Modesto, picked up victories in both ends of last Saturday’s HotWood 750 Series 75-lap twin features giving him four wins in just nine starts. Among Gottula’s victims last Saturday were defending Flashco SRL Southwest Tour champion Dave Byrd of San Jose, defending NASCAR Camping World West Series champion Mike David of Modesto and former three time Stockton 99 Speedway champion Harry Belletto of Modesto.
Thanks to his impressive performance last weekend Gottula has now stretched out his 2008 season points lead to a 292 to 197 margin over Stockton’s Joey Stearns. Stearns has very little breathing room as a gaggle of drivers lurk right behind him in the standings including Schlundt (196), Modesto’s Jeff Belletto (176), Strmiska (173) and rookie points leader Vito Ranuio, of Stockton, with 129.
Gottula has also seized the lead in the special HotWood 750 Series, in which $6,000 in bonus money will be paid out at the end of the season based on the results of nine designated races. After three HotWood races Gottula leads Strmiska by a 103 to 78 point margin.
Modesto’s Dennis Saunders Jr. picked the perfect time to score his first ever career win in the American Limited Stock Cars (ALSC) division by taking the checkered flag in last Saturday’s special 50-lap ALSC feature. Three-time 2008 race winner Howard Holden, of Clovis, finished in second last Saturday to maintain his season points lead by a 282 to 226 margin over Stockton’s Brian Vosburg. Saunders holds down the third position with 207 points.
Madera’s Randy Fleming Jr. picked up his third straight win last Saturday to pad his lead in the Modified Super Toyotas, Jason Kerns earned his second win of the season to take back the lead over fellow Fresno pilot Stan Hankins by a razor thin 119 to 117 margin in the Toyota Sedans and defending division champion Miles Humphreys, of Clovis, regained the points lead in the Hornets with his exciting victory last Saturday night.
So break out your best moo moo skirt that you have been saving for a special occasion and come on out to “The fastest 1/3 Mile in the West” for Craftsman Tool Night this Saturday night and join in the fun.
