BROWNSBURG, Indiana – I enjoyed a weekend off at home, kind of. While I was in Indianapolis, I wasn’t home too much as I made the three mile drive up Raceway Road to O’Reilly Raceway Park for Mike Fuqua’s Jeg’s U.S. Open, a high-paying bracket race (with close to 400 cars entered), with payouts totaling over $60,000 over the course of four days for the main races. But there were other specialty races, including a golf cart race on Saturday night, built into the weekend.
Mother Nature only cooperated on Thursday, Saturday and part of Sunday. Friday was washed out completely as rains heavy moved through the area. Most of Sunday’s competition got in until about 8 p.m. when the skies turned dark and opened up, cancelling the remainder of the night’s racing.
Four-time sportsman champion and Ringers’ racer Peter Biondo picked up a $10,000 paycheck on Thursday in the opening day of the race. He defeated Jeremy York in the final. On Saturday, Biondo made yet another appearance in final round, this time taking on reigning Pro Stock champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. Unfortunately Biondo was on the short end of the stick, and Jeggie took home the $25,000 paycheck.
In NASCAR action this weekend, the Craftsman Truck Series visited the Michigan International Speedway on Friday night for the Cool City Customs 200. Brendan Gaughan led the Ringers’ pack of racers and teams to the finish line in the fifth position. Two places behind Gaughan was the No. 51 Billy Ballew Motorsports Miccosukee entry in seventh and the second Ballew entry, the No. 15 Ergon Hyprene Toyota in 22nd. The No. 08 Gunbroker.com SS Green Light Racing entry finished one lap down in 28th, the No. 07 ASI Limited SS Green Light entry retiring from the race early with brake problems in 32nd.
The Sprint Cup Series took to the Brooklyn, Mich.-based track on Sunday afternoon for the LifeLock 400. Kurt Busch and his No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge let the Penske Racing contingent to the checkers in 21st place, with Sam Hornish Jr. and the No. 77 Mobil 1 Dodge right behind him in 22nd. Ryan Newman pulled his No. 12 Alltel Dodge into the garage early with engine problems, sideling him from finishing the race. He was scored in 42nd.
The Craftsman Trucks and Nationwide Series head to The Milwaukee Mile on Thursday and Friday for their respective races, with the Sprint Cup Series heading to California’s wine country and Infineon Raceway.
I head out Thursday morning to New Jersey for the Lucas Oil Supernationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown for our weekend’s event. Have a great week everyone!
