AMARGOSA VALLEY – Las Vegas driver Randall Boren overtook Jim Castaneda on the 18th lap and captured the 25-lap Classic Coupe feature to highlight racing action here Saturday night at Death Valley Raceway.

Boren, 48, started on the outside of the third row in his ’32 Ford Classic Coupe built by long-time dirt track driver Sam Stringer. He came into the race leading the Classic Coupe points standings, although Saturday’s triumph was his first victory of the year.

“This is my first year in Classic Coupes,’’ said Boren, a former asphalt Modified driver. “I moved to Classic Coupes because they require far less monetary commitment. With the car being a two-seater, I can have a co-rider. Earlier this year, I let my son, Joshua, ride with me and my daughter, Janelle, rode with me for my first win. It was a perfect Father’s Day gift.”

Boren, who has driven truck for Las Vegas Paving or 15 years, predicted that the Classic Coupes would continue to grow for several reasons. He said his sponsors – Rick Keller of Keller Racing Engines and Donny Berger of Berger Chassis – followed him to the division.

“These cars are a blast to drive,” said Boren. “They run stock 305 motors. You can run regular pump fuel. Also, you can run the same tires for two years. There are simply so many reasons why running a Classic Coupe is a lot of fun.

“These cars do not get torn up much and they are easy to work on. All parts are readily available any parts store or junk yard. It’s all stock.

Boren said competitive Classic Coupes have purchased for as little as $6,500.

Other winners at DVR included Dan Fitzgerald (IMCA Modifieds), Anthony DeBiase (Super Stocks), Mike Lysinger (Mini Stocks), Eric Slusher (Mod Minis) and Steve Edwards (Factory Stocks).
