HULTS DOUBLES ON FRIDAY DURING THE DODGE CHALLENGER MID-SEASON CHAMPIONSHIPS

Centennial’s Ronnie Hults has been hot in the ableplanet Late Model Division and Friday night proved it. Hults took both Late Model 40-lap mains during the Dodge Challenger Mid-Season Championships at Colorado National Speedway. Emett Grazier stormed to his fifth Doc Popcorn Super Stock win of the season, while Rich Bubak took another CARC Modified Coupe trophy home to add to his collection. Paul Deines took his first SUNOCO Grand American Modified win of the season and Termin’8’or added another train win to their resume.

At the drop of the green flag for the first ableplanet Late Model feature, Darren Crocker jumped into the lead over Roger Avants, Joe James Jr, Bruce Yackey and Ronnie Hults. James took second on lap 3, and Hults took fourth on lap 4. On lap 6, contact sent Avants way high in turn 2 knocking Avants to sixth and moving Rick Smith to fourth. Hults was second on lap 9 and started reeling in Crocker. On lap 13, Hults went to the inside of Crocker they raced side-by-side, until Hults cleared Crocker on lap 15. Smith moved into third on lap 17 and on lap 18, Sam Walls spun and was hit by Mike Bowen for a caution. Smith pulled off the track under the caution moving James back up to third ahead of Yackey and Avants. James took over second on the restart with Yackey moving into third. Avants knocked Crocker back to fifth on lap 21 and James spun for a lap 28 caution. Yackey was now second ahead of Avants, Crocker and rookie Tyler Chrisinger. Nick Rozack and Chrisinger battled for fifth for several laps with Chrisinger taking the spot. Caution flew on lap 37 for Mike Hannah and Darren Robertson spinning, and also PJ Mattorano spinning. Hannah and Mattorano went to the rear of the field. On the restart, James slid into the turn 1 wall and drove off for a caution. Hults led the rest of the way over Yackey, Avants, Crocker and Chrisinger.

The CARC Modified Coupes were next to hit the Speedway, and Rick Bubak jumped into the early lead. David Johnson was second ahead of Carl Vair, Scott Rhoades and Gary Land. Frank Denning III took fifth from Land on lap 2, and was fourth a lap later. By lap 10, Denning got around Vair and the front 4 cars were all together. On lap 15, Vair took third back from Denning and on lap 17 Jaime Bubak blew up and spun, then Jack Backman and Bob Land tangled slowing down for the caution. On lap 18, Eric Blackard and Chet Graham tangled for a caution, and on lap 20, Johnson spun for a caution. On the restart, Denning got by Vair for second and went after Bubak. Rhoades fourth place run ended on lap 23 when he pulled off and rookie Mike Fetters was now fifth. Denning tried everything to get by Bubak, but Bubak took the narrow win. Denning was a close second over Vair, Land and Fetters.

The Doc Popcorn Super Stocks invaded the Speedway next and Mike Cox jumped to the early lead over Matt Burton, Darrell Smith, Dennis Edwards and Emett Grazier in fifth. Burton took the lead on lap 3 and Grazier took over fourth. On lap 5, Don Patterson and Mike Powers tangled for a caution. Grazier took over third on the restart, and then took second on lap 9. Keenan Riddell slowed for a lap 10 caution flag. Burton led on the restart over Grazier, Edwards, Cox and Mario Garramone. Grazier took the lead on lap 11 and Garramone moved into fourth. Grazier, Burton and Edwards all were battling for the first three positions, and Edwards was second on lap 21. Grazier took the win over Edwards, Burton, Garramone and Cox.

Jeff Hansen stormed to the lead early in the SUNOCO Grand American Modified feature over Paul Deines, Ed Vecchiarelli, Ed Vecchiarelli Jr and Terry Tjarks. Jace Hansen took fifth on lap 6, and Deines took the lead on lap 7. Jace Hansen was third on lap 9 and second on lap 13. Jace Hansen tried running down Deines, but ran out of time as Deines took the win over Jace Hansen, Jeff Hansen, Ed Vecchiarelli and Ed Vecchiarelli Jr.

The second ableplanet Late Model feature started off with a bad start, once the green waved for good, Darren Cocker led over Bruce Yackey, Tyler Chrisinger, Roger Avants and Ronnie Hults. Hults took fourth on lap 3, and caution flew on lap 6 when Nick Rozack’s car caught on fire. The CNS safety team did an incredible job of getting Nick out of the car and getting the fire extinguished. Chrisinger got shuffled back on the restart and Nick Rozack was now fifth. Chrisinger stopped with a flat on lap 15, and once the race resumed the top 3 of Crocker, Yackey and Hults were fighting for the lead. By lap 25, Rick Smith was fifth and on lap 28 Hults was second. On lap 29, Mike Bowen spun for a caution and once the race resumes a great battle was shaping up with the front 5 cars. Mike Hannah and Sam Walls tangled for a lap 31 caution and Hults got by Crocker on lap 37, then Darren Robertson spun for a lap 38 caution flag. Hults led the rest of the way over Crocker, Avants, Yackey and Smith.

In one of the most exciting train races, Termin’8’or took the win after getting hit in the X by Last Call.####
