O FIREWORKS, BUT SPARKS FLY IN LUCAS OIL LATE MODELSSAN BERNARDINO – It started out as a good night for the Palm Canyon Contractors team of John Mattie and Brian Malone who moved into first and second position early in the Lucas Oil ASA Late Model main event. It didn’t take long, however for Malone to pass his teammate and take the lead, with San Bernardino’s Stevie Smith moving into second. That’s how it stood for most of the race as the battle raged constantly for third place. Mattie continually had to fend off both Austin Murphy and Yucaipa native Kevin James. It looked like a sure victory for Malone as contact on the track led to two consecutive yellow flags going into the final laps of the race. On the second restart Smith tried to make a move on Malone sending him spinning out of turn four, and sending both cars to the rear of the line-up. Mattie became the race leader and he was able to hold off fast qualifier Ryan Daniel to win his first main event in almost two years.

The ASA Speed Truck Challenge made its second and final visit to the historic ¼ mile banked oval of the OSS for a double points 100 lap main event. Mesa, Arizona native Jeff Catlin took the lead over Lake Balboa’s Joey Licata early in the race. Division points leader Darren Young snaked his way into third, then second, and finally took the lead in the United Nissan/Sudden Impact Chevy S-10. Young held onto the lead to win the event, while Santee native Todd McLauchlan and Fullerton’s Tim Allen battled for second. Homeland native Shawn Steele was the hard charger as he started in the rear of the line-up and raced his way into a fourth place finish.

Santee’s Darren Amidon continued to dominate the Lenos Rico Taco Inex Legends division. 2007 Legends champ Amidon won his fifth consecutive main event at OSS in his CJ Norby Signs/Tel-Data sponsored Legends car. Las Vegas native Jeremiah Wagner was able to pass Amidon twice in the race, but the second time the yellow flag came out before Wagner could lead a complete lap and he was sent back to second. The race was plagued with yellow flags and in the final laps, when a clean restart could not be accomplished; the race was finished under caution.

2007 champion Jim Edmiston won his third main event with his Francie’s Pub & Grill/Clearwater Pipeline sponsored Ford Pinto in the ASA Stock Pony division. Edmiston took the lead in lap two and never lost it. Riverside’s Jim Mardis was unable to finish the race leaving Ryan Bragdon of Beaumont and Adrianne Murlin of Corona to compete for third behind Wildomar’s Matt Goodwin. Contact late in the race sent both cars to the rear of the line-up however, and Murlin had to return to the pits. This turn of events allowed Rookie of the Year candidate Robby Hornsby to finish third, his best of the season so far.

Race fans were treated to a bit of racing history Saturday night as the Western Racing Association presented two exhibition races with both Sprint Cars and Midgets. The cars are no less than 60 years old and the drivers are all veterans of years past racing.

Current WRA president John Lee of Newhall won the Sprint Car event, and Frank Bothwell of Victorville took the checkered flag in the Midgets.
