UPLAND, California --The ASA Speed Truck Challenge (ASA STC) rolled into Orange Show Speedway and were ready to make some noise at their last race on July 5th on the always-exciting ¼ mile bullring. And noise they made! The balance of July will hold no less excitement with a dramatic showing this weekend at “LA’s ½ - Mile Super Speedway” at the famous Toyota Speedway at Irwindale. With only four races left in the 2008 season, the Championship Points’ race is far from being wrapped up.
Darren Young, ASA STC veteran and two-time champion leads the race by what some would say is a substantial margin, however history dictates that nothing is a given in this talent-packed field that makes up one of the hottest series in the country. Young, in the #18 United Nissan / Sudden Impact Chevy S-10 is followed by another veteran driver of many different series, Todd McLauchlan in the #38 Institutional Cabinet & Millwork / ULTRA Boats Chevy Colorado by a very slim 38 points.
“Even though Darren has had a couple good runs lately,” said McLauchlan, “our truck and crew have some surprises left for the end of the season. It definitely won’t be over until the fat lady sings this year!” McLauchlan’s wife, spotter and biggest fan, Lisa said, “Todd is very determined to make this the fourth different motorsports series in which he has won a championship and when he is that focused, good things happen for him. We are very excited to see just what will take place up to the final race right here at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale on October 25th.”
ASA STC series 12-year president and director, Jay Rutherford is also quick to point out, “At this time last year, mathematically, we had ten drivers that could actually win the series and this year is no different. Do not count out other drivers sitting close by in the points’ standing such as Jason Black #9, Dallas Colodny #08, Paul Bonaccorsi #11, and Jeff Catlin #1. We are excited about this weekend’s race for fans as they get to see our Speed Trucks battle it out for 75 laps on one of the fastest tracks in the country. You won’t want to miss this great showcase of driving talent with many series’ veterans as well as six of the best rookies in the country.”
The Speed Trucks are full tube chassis, 108 inch wheelbase, 375 horsepower Van Gordon Racing V-8’s, fired by Mr. Gasket’s - Mallory / ACCEL ignition systems with 2-speed direct drive Luke’s Transmissions and Speedway Engineering aluminum quick change rear ends on 8-inch Hoosier Racing Tires and Allied Racing Wheels. The Speed Trucks will reach speeds of 110 MPH at the ½ mile Irwindale Speedway oval and 140 MPH on the 1.7-mile road course at Firebird International Raceway.
