ERIE, Colorado—Chris Leaf took his first 2008 win during the Snap-On Tools Pro Truck feature as Colorado National Speedway held the Whelen All American Series NASCAR Knockout. Jay Sant outran Nick Burton to win the 600 Mini Sprint feature event and Frank Denning III claimed the CARC Modified Coupe feature. JimBob Rogers held off Tommy Roe to win the Suss.net Sportsman main event after a first-lap wreck damaged several cars and Turbo Train chugged to the Witthar Racing Train win.
Jay Sant took off in the 600 Mini Sprint feature with Nick Burton, Paul Babich, Todd Weland and Larry Pachello following. Pachello was fourth on lap 4 and Burton was all over Sant pressuring him for the lead. Stan Allen took fifth on lap 14 and then got by Pachello for fourth. Sant pulled out to a lead towards the end of the race as he held on for his second Colorado National Speedway win of the season.
In the CARC Modified Coupe feature Scott Rhoades jumped out to the early lead. Carl Vair was second early on over Frank Denning III, David Johnson and Corey Gordon. Gordon got extremely loose on lap 3 loosing several positions. David Johnson spun backwards into the wall for a lap 4 caution flag. Rhoades led Vair, Denning, Rich Bubak and Jaime Bubak. Denning moved into second on lap 5, and then got by Rhoades for the lead on lap 6. Rhoades and Vair battles for second as Denning checked out. By lap 20, J Bubak got by her father R Bubak for fourth and she reeled in Vair, but Denning sailed to the win over Rhoades, Vair, J Bubak and R Bubak.
On the first lap of the Suss.net Sportsman race, half of the 20-car field sustained damage with a wreck on the back-stretch. Sustaining damage was Lee Kemmit, Eric Blackard, Troy Meyer, Jeff Webb, Jim Lahey, Stephanie Brown, Dennis Marion, Jeff Walbaum, Brian Anglim and at least one more. Meyer, Kemmit and Lahey were finished for the evening. When the race restarted, Tommy Roe grabbed the early lead over JimBob Rogers, Craig Holmes, Alan Carter and Jason Trujillo. Nick Brinlee moved into fifth on lap 2, and got by Carter for fourth a lap later. Bruce Borchardt got by Carter for fifth on lap 10, and Rogers got by Roe on lap 16 for the lead. Roe stayed with Rogers and Webb was fifth on lap 23. Walbaum pressured Webb for fifth, but couldn’t make the pass. Rogers held on for the win with Roe a close second over Holmes, Brinlee and Webb.
The Pro Trucks were sent out for a 40-lap battle and Beau Kellogg jumped into the early lead over Rudy Vanderwal, Chris Leaf, Happy Ferree and Adam Deines. Leaf got by Vanderwal for second on lap 2 and Deines and Vanderwal collided at the end of lap 3 with Vanderwal going through the infield loosing several positions. By lap 5 Leaf led Ferree, Kellogg, Richard Burton and Mark Neff. Richard Burton spun for a lap 8 caution and Neff was sent to the rear moving Deines to fifth. Deines and Burton staged an awesome battle for fourth. Ferree took the lead on lap 13 with Leaf hanging on for second. After about 20 laps of side by side racing for fourth, Burton cleared Deines on lap 30. Ronnie Hults got by Deines for fifth on lap 31, and Hults was fourth on lap 33. Ferree opened up his lead and Deines got by Burton late in the race. Ferree took the win over Leaf, Kellogg, Hults and Deines. In post-race inspection, Ferree was penalized four positions moving Leaf to the win ahead of Kellogg, Hults, Deines and Ferree.
In a very wild train race, Turbo Train took the win over SNAFU. During the race, Steel Dragon lost axles out of their rear car and several trains ran it over. Two Two Twain ended up next to the turn 3 wall, and all three cars of ½ Fool and Plum M.T. separated and they all went different directions.![]()
