FIRST TIMER SWEETMAN LOSES PARTS BUT WINS THE BSR WEST SUPER LATE MODELS RACESAN BERNARDINO, California – The BSR West Super Late Models ran twin 50 lap main events on Saturday, but not all the action was on the track. In the first race Riverside’s Mark Shackleford took the lead and held it for the entire 50 laps. Points leader Linny White showed his driving chops by making his way through the field and catching up with Shackleford’s teammate John Keller, who was running second. Keller was able to hold White back to a third place finish while Mark Shackleford won his first main event of the 2008 season in the Blackjack Fireworks/Luke’s Transmission Chevy Monte Carlo.

During the final laps of the race El Cajon native Eric Sweetman made contact with Highland’s Rob Kiemele, causing Kiemele to skid and roll. After it was determined that both drivers were ok, an altercation between the drivers ensued, resulting in Kiemele being escorted off the Speedway property.

Sweetman was able to get his car fixed in time for the second 50 lap race, minus a hood and front driver side quarter panel. Saturday night was Sweetman’s first time racing at the historic high-banked ¼ mile oval of the Orange Show Speedway, but he drove it like a veteran, leading the entire 50 laps to earn his first win at the OSS in the Hothead Salon/S&S Sandcars Chevy Monte Carlo. Linny White was held to a third place finish again, this time by first main event winner Mark Shackleford, who finished second.

The Super Clean Modified series ran its second main event at the OSS on Saturday. 31 drivers showed up for the race, which forced a B-main event with the top four finishers moving on to the main event. Simi Valley’s Andrew Phipps took the lead early with Burbank driver Tim Morse in pursuit. Despite several yellow flags, Morse was unable to get past Phipps who continually pulled far ahead of the pack, often putting lap cars between himself and Morse. Lakeside’s Jimmy Dickerson battled with Riverside’s Jimmy Mardis, who also races in the Stock Pony division at OSS, for third. At one point, Mardis got inside Dickerson and looked like he might make the pass, but Dickerson had the edge on speed and held his position, eventually passing Morse to finish second. After leading all 75 laps, Andrew Phipps took the checkered flag in his Spartan Truck Co. sponsored Modified car.

Stock Pony champion Jimmy Edmiston decided to run with the ASA Factory Fours on Saturday night. Early in the race, points leader Art Ramirez took the lead with Crestline’s Kim Marzullo, Edmiston, and 2008 season newcomer Dwayne Blay in tow. The four cars ran 20 laps in that order until a nudge from Marzullo sent Ramirez spinning in turn two. Both cars were sent to the rear of the field leaving Edmiston as the leader to take first in the Kidd Racing Entertainment sponsored truck.

Bryan Glidewell worked his way meticulously through the field of cars, which included three time winner Don Minut, to claim his second victory in the ASA Pro-4’s division. Points leader Chuck Becker did not race. As a result, Riverside’s Don Minut moves into first in points with Glidewell in second by only two points.

The Inex Legends ran a race for national points.

After a spin during lap one, pole sitter Jeff King was sent to the rear of the field leaving Oak Hill driver Chad Schug on the pole for the restart. Mechanical problems in lap seven forced Schug out of the race leaving former Rookie of the Year Brent Scheidemantle in the lead. Scheidemantle was passed by Jeremiah Wagner of Las Vegas and Malibu’s Eric Gunderson during lap 13, with Wagner winning the 20 lap national points event in the Dupont sponsored Legends car.
