Jason Patison and the Speed Wong Racing Team traveled to Toyota Speedway at Irwindale, CA for race #11 in the NASCAR Camping World West Series. Patison and team have been trying to shake a black cloud for the past 6 races as they have been plagued by flat tires, wrecks and motor failure.
After qualifying 12th out of the 29 car field, Patison knew that his car would be much better on long runs and was anxious for the green flag to waive for the 200 lap main event. When the flag dropped Patison immediately went to work around the bottom groove and started working his way to the front of the field. When the caution flew at lap 100 and pit stops began Patison had worked his way up to 4th place but reported a tight condition in his racecar and called for several adjustments.
With new right side tires and a full tank of gas Patison went back to work but found that he had called for too many adjustments and his car was now loose through the corners. Over the next 20 laps he fell back to 7th and was searching the track for a line that worked better. Once he adjusted his line around the track he quickly regained those positions and a little more. Patison brought his number 17 machine home in 3rd place, a real spirit lifter for the whole team.
“We have worked very hard this entire season and we just had horrible luck. I am so relieved to finally have a finish that reflects the amount of hard work and time that the team has spent. I made a mistake at the break calling for too many changes, I thought the track would tighten up more and I just didn’t have enough forward bite to catch the leaders at the end. But I am still extremely happy with this finish, my Speed Wong Team did a great job getting this Jasper Engines, Lucas Oil Ford up front.”
Patison’s next event will be the NASCAR Camping World West Series race at Altamont Motorsports Park on September 13th.
