COEBURN, Virginia — With the season entering its final weeks of the 2008 schedule, ASA sanctioned Lonesome Pine Raceway's Late Model Division took a night off as the UARA-STARS touring series came to town for the UARA-STARS 150. LPR's other regular divisions were featured on the program and once again put on an exciting action-filled show for the fans.
In the afternoon qualifying session Alan Woodruff again led the Pure4 competitors with a fast lap of 20.725. Rocky Yates earned his 7th Mod4 pole position of the season by turning a lap of 18.361. Freddie Taylor Jr picked up his 7th Charger pole award of the year with a fast lap of 17.402, and Chuck Crigger won his 4th Street Stock pole of the year with a lap of 17.707.
First up on the evening's racing program was the Pure4 Division with Woodruff's #07 and Linton Perry's #1 battling for the top spot from the drop of the green. The #59 of James Stiltner suffered a mechanical failure even before the field took the green and #49 of John Jones retired to the pits with a mechanical failure on the first lap of the event. Perry made a move to get inside of Woodruff on lap 4 and the two ran most of a lap side-by-side before Woodruff again pulled in front. On lap nine Perry made hard contact with the rear bumper of the #07 as the two entered turn 3 with Woodruff managing to maintain control and hold onto the lead. As that was happening, the #20 of Marion Guy suffered a major engine failure entering turn 3 just behind the leaders and oiled down the track to bring out a caution and subsequent red flag for track cleanup. On the first lap after the restart, Mike Collins spun his #7 Honda in turn 3 to bring out another caution. On the restart Tom Hodges had his #94 Nissan working inside Perry for 2nd position, and on lap 18 Hodges moved around Woodruff to take the lead. Hodges held the top position for the remaining 7 laps to capture his first win of the season as a driver. His car won on August 30th with racing reporter Jeff Bobo behind the wheel. Woodruff, Perry, Kenny Nix and Tony Casteel completed the top five.
The Mod4's were next up on the program with Rocky Yates (#3) and Jody Bostic (#44) leading the field to green. Bostic grabbed the top spot from his outside front row position. As the field exited turn 4 to complete the first lap the #9 of Hershel Robinette slapped the outside wall but kept control and maintained the pace. However, the caution waved as David Brown spun his #13 off turn 2 before the second lap could be completed. Bostic continued to lead after the restart, and a second caution waved on lap 3 as Duke Bare's #10 stalled on the back stretch. Bostic again maintained his lead on the restart with Yates making a move to the inside for the top position on lap 5, only to have his car break loose and spin off turn 4. Richard Adkins spun his #73 Dodge Avenger behind Yates, with neither car making any contact with anything, and both able to continue. Freddie Taylor Jr ran down and passed Bostic's #44 on lap 11, then lead the remaining 19 laps to claim his first Mod4 feature of the season at LPR. Rounding out the top five behind Taylor at the finish were Bostic, Yates, Brown and Adkins. One of LPR's most popular drivers, Bristol's Jenna Wagner, was forced to "start and park" the #07 Pure4 of Alan Woodruff after suffering an engine failure in her #75 Mod4 during afternoon practice. Wagner's car had suffered major damage after being caught up in a wreck not of her making during the 08/30 event at LPR, so she has really had some tough luck in the last two events, but maintains her 5th place points standing.
The Advance Auto Parts Charger Division took to the track next of the regular weekly divisions, with Freddie Taylor Jr's #16 opening up a quick lead from his pole starting spot. As the cars exited turn 4 on the second lap, Mitch Gibson's second running #49 Ford F150 broke loose and spun down the front straight bring out a caution. Gibson was able to continue with no damage, but was never able to regain the lost positions. On the ensuing restart, the #16 of Taylor and the #17 of Kevin Wolfe make contact off turn 4 (later described by both drivers as purely accidental) and both maintained control with Taylor continuing to lead. Wolfe made repeated attempts to get underneath Taylor for the next six laps before finally moving by and into the lead on lap nine. On lap 12, Caleb Roark moved his #7 around Nasty Jones for 3rd and the cars maintained position to the finish with Wolfe taking the win. Shull, Taylor, Roark and Jones rounded out the top five finishers.
The Finish Line Parking Street Stocks closed out the evening of competition with Chuck Crigger's #71 and Jeff Counts' #11 leading the field to green. Crigger and Counts ran lap 1 side-by-side with Counts then nosing ahead to lead two laps before Crigger retook the lead for good. As the race progressed it was Crigger, Counts and point leader Rob Austin battling for the top three positions with David Brown, Freddie Taylor Jr and Doug Austin battling for 4th, 5th and 6th. Scott Anderson's #7 Camaro was suffering a vibration and he pitted on lap 20 and again on lap 30 to have that checked. At the finish it was Crigger picking up his 5th win in eight starts, with Counts, Rob Austin, Brown and Taylor completing the top five.
ASA Lonesome Pine Raceway will be back in action with a full program of racing action, as the featured Graceway Pharmaceuticals late Models return next Saturday September 20th.
