MADRID, SHUMAKER, MARTINEZ AND TINCH TAKE WINS AT MANZANITA SPEEDWAY

Anthony Madrid continued his winning ways and edged a little closer to the front runners in total wins when he was virtually unchallenged in Friday night’s Dirt Car Modified feature at Manzanita Speedway. The win marked his eighth dirt modified win this year and it was the 123rd win of his career. He is ranked behind only Terry Belcher (190) and Gene Brown (152). Madrid, who won his third dirt modified championship last month, was chased to the finish line by two time champion Ricky Thornton and Chris McCurdy, Jr

The Manzanita point season was over but Madrid hoped to improve on his eighth place standings in the UMP Modified National Series.

Since there was no incentive for other cars to run in the non points race only 11 Dirt Car Modifieds showed up. Madrid pocketed the $600 first place check and all starters received at least $50. Chasing the top three to the finish line were Danny Price who was making his first start of the season, Brian Zalenka, Ricky Thornton, Jr., Jason Noll, Sammy Schoolcraft, Art Lacy, Brian Schultz and Reeve Staley.

Lacy came out of the second row and beat Thornton, Sr., Staley and Noll in the first eight lap heat race. It was all Madrid as "The Friday Night Flyer" shot away from the field and made it look easy in beating McCurdy, Zalenka and Brian Schultz in the second heat.

The Dirt Car Modifieds have almost two months off and the time will be used to fine tune their cars as they expect a tough field of out of state drivers for the Nationals November 14-15. The Dirt Car Late Model Stocks will also be running their Nationals as well. The Modifieds will conduct their races on the one third mile track the big bore stock cars will be on the half mile oval.

A couple of new names appeared on the 2008 winner’s list as Patrick Shumaker held off Jody Henderson and Jason Harvil in the factory stock car feature for his first career win. Steve Shumaker finished fourth after leading the first four laps then Patrick took over and led the final 11 circuits. Dominique Askren drove a smooth, steady race and was fifth under the checkered flag. The rest of the top ten, in order, were Bobby Erdman, Joe Peterson, Ruben Solares, Jr., Kevin Souligne and Joe Willis.

Henderson took care of business in the first eight lap heat race as he methodically worked his way from sixth to first. Steve Shumaker was second ahead of Erdman and Harvil.

The second heat went to Patrick Shumaker who made a great drive from seventh in beating Solares, Askren and Willis.

Matt Martinez, one of the top factory stock car drivers with four feature wins, drove a bomber for only the second time and parked in the winner’s circle. He started sixth in the Auto Sinclair #41 bomber, chased down early leader Ron Neis on the sixth lap and then held off Jeff Czoka who was trying for a fifth win. Jesse Johnson finished third. Mike Bray, a three time main event winner, finished fourth ahead of veteran driver Frank Outlaw. Rounding out the top ten were Toby Webito, Buddy Wade, Russ Odman, Tyler Gerard and Rex Hasley.

The first heat ran eight laps and Czoka won it, his sixth heat win of the year. He started fourth and held off Martinez who started a row behind him. Lyle Askren, Jr was third and Webito took fourth.

The second and third heats were six lappers. Neis came out of the third row and beat Chuck Thornton, Wade and Shawn Beissell. Johnson showed his power with a win over Bray, Miller and Hasley in the final heat.

Miller started off his evening on a high note as he held off Askren, Bill Lewis and John Windahl in winning his first ever trophy dash.

Savannah Tinch drove the factory stock car that carried Patrick Shumaker to his win and parked it again in the winners circle after beating Becky Madrid and Amanda Lilly in the Lady Stock’s main event.

The Factory Stocks will begin preparing for the Factory Stock Showdown October 3-4. Southwest Modlites and Sport Modifieds share the track Friday night and AMA Modlites, Dwarf Cars and Sport Modifieds run companion shows Saturday night. In addtion the Factory Stocks are on the schedule October 17 and 25.

The bombers have only one regular season race, that on October 17th. They will rap up their season with the Ecology Auto Parts 150 lap Bomber Enduro November 1st. The Enduro is their big race with the winner pocketing $1000.
