WAUSAU, Wisconsin — NASCAR driver Scott Wimmer will be participating in a celebrity snowmobile ride at the Amsoil World Championship Snowmobile Derby in Eagle River, WI on Friday Jan. 16, 2009. The 46th running of the derby will attract drivers and fans from all around the US and Canada.
The celebrity charity ride started three years ago as a fundraiser for the families of two drivers who died at the derby in Eagle River. Flip Merwin, of Wausau, WI died at the age of 28 in 2003, and Ed Devault of Cottage Grove, WI never regained consciousness after his accident, and died ten months later in 2002. Snowmobile enthusiasts offer donations to ride along with the celebrity drivers over fifty miles of trail.
"Both Flip and Ed lost their lives to the sport they loved, it's an honor to be involved in such a great memorial" reflected Scott. Scott's inaugural ride in 2009 will bring him to the Snowmobile Capital of The World for several exciting days of riding, racing and fan interaction. Fellow drivers Rich Bickle,Bobby Unser, Dick Trickle and Tim Sauter have also participated in the event in the past.
"I really look forward to getting back to the Northwood's of Wisconsin to watch the greatest snowmobile race of the year; this has long been considered the Daytona 500 of iced oval snowmobile racing" said Wimmer.
