A late race charge by former dirt modified champion Ricky Thornton, Jr. propelled him by three time champion Anthony Madrid on the final lap of the 20 lap main event Friday night at Manzanita Speedway. Madrid, who was seeking his 124th career win, took the lead at the drop of the green flag but Thornton, who started eighth, got his nose in front as they completed the 18th lap and completed the pass of the final lap. Jay Foster finished third ahead of Tim Ward and Chuck Kuehl. Rounding out the top ten were Bob Sanders, Mike Bobbins, Jay Parvin, Steve Carter and Steve Shultz.
Madrid made it look easy in beating Sanders and Kuehl in the first eight lap heat race and Thornton went wire to wire in the second heat with Foster and Ed Beebe in pursuit.
While Madrid figured to be the driver to beat in the factory stock 20 lap feature he blew a tire after leading the first four laps. He made a quick pit stop and lined up at the rear of the field.
William McCullough added his name to the winner’s list with his first ever win. He came out of the fifth row and had the lead when he completed the sixth lap. Despite numerous yellow flags that kept the field close he was up to all challenges and beat Danny Pearson, Ty Weidner and Madrid with Ron Poe taking fifth. The rest of the top ten, in order, were Jody Henderson, Reed Veralrud, Matt Martinez, Bobby Taylor and Michael Humphrey.
The 37 car field ran four heat races, a consy and a semi to fill the 20 car main event field. The top four from each heat made the feature and the top four in the semi also transferred to the main. Madrid took the lead on the first lap of the first heat and led Mike Lilly, McCullough and Chuck Thornton to the checkered flag. The second heat went to Martinez over Pearson, Terry Mumaugh and Weidner. In the third heat Marlowe Wrightsman, Taylor, Henderson and John Baker earned their way into the feature. D.C. Parmeley edged Poe, Ron Smith and Crystal Reynolds in the final heat.
Veralud won the semi with Byran Zalenka, Ruben Solares, Jr. and Ron Reynolds getting the final four spots in the feature.
Harry Roud won the Consy over Joe Peterson, Sahib Markovich and Jeremy Smith.
Matt Martinez led all 15 laps in the bomber feature but almost lost it when Daniel Romero finished a scant two feet behind him. Kevin Czoka finished third ahead of Daniel Romero, Mike Bray and Jim Miller. Rounding out the top ten were Randy Allen, Ron Neis, Aaron Oachs, Mark Collier and Rex Hasley.
With 44 bombers on hand there were four heat races with 11 cars in each heat. The first heat went to Martinez over Hasley, Frank Outlaw and Tyler Gerard. The top four in the second heat were Allen, Miller, Jeff Mokry and Rob Parcher. The third heat had Neis out front at the checkered flag with Daniel Romero, Jesse Johnson and Collier in pursuit. Bray beat the field in the final heat with Czoka, John Romero and Oachs trailing.
The first "B" main went to Shawn Beissel who finished ahead of Russ Odman, Susie Wood and Cory Tait. The second "B" was won by Michael Knobloch with Gene Heitchler, Howard Lindsay and Toby Webito trailing.
Bobby Newman won the trophy dash in his first start.
The dirt dolls, not to be out done, had a competitive 10 lap feature with Dawn Klem making a drive from ninth to edge early leader Becky Madrid with Savannah Tinch in third. Rounding out the field were Rhonda Gill, Amanda Madrid, Lori James, Amber Taylor, #44x, Jennifer Lilly and Tish Hamblen. Becky Madrid led the first three laps and the Klem, seventh led the final seven laps.
