Roseville's Eric Schmidt grabbed the lead from Modesto's Jeff Belletto following a lap 23 restart to take over the lead in the HotWood 111-lap feature for the NASCAR Whelen All American Western Late Models at Madera Speedway on Saturday. Deftly using lapped traffic,Schmidt was able to hold off a determined Kyle Gottula of Modesto over the final 25 laps to earn the win.
Former two-time Madera Grand American Modified champion made a late race pass on
Chris Smith of Mendota to capture the first of two 25-lap Grand American races and then ran away from the field in the second race for a sweep in the Grand American features.
Other winners included Matt Erickson of Lake Don Pedro in the American Limited Stock Car main, Chris Lewis of Sanger in the Toyota Sedans, John McCollum Jr.of Stockton in the Modified Super Toyotas and Modesto's Daryn Adams in the Demolition Derby.
