WOOD WINNER IN MOTORCYCLE HEADLINER AT VENTURA

VENTURA, California — Jimmy Wood emerged from an early-race scramble with the lead and spent the remainder of the event increasing his advantage before winning the Pro Modern Open main event of the Outlaw Motorcycle Races at Ventura Raceway.

The Pro Modern was one of 14 classes at the track. The two-wheel spectacular drew 116 entries.

Wood, of Redlands, was the third rider to lead a lap in the first three laps. Madera’s Michael Avila led the first lap and Ventura’s Kayl Kolkman led the second. A rare red flag briefly stopped the festivities after the third lap, but on the restart Wood again grabbed the lead and began pulling away.

Kolkman finished second and Avila was third in the 20-lap feature.

Donnie Harrell, Visalia, won the Amateur Modern open race.

Culver City’s Joe Pape earned a crowd-pleasing victory when he finished first in the Hooligan/Chopper main event. Choppers do not readily lend themselves to oval, dirt track racing and the crowd enjoyed Pape’s effort.

Ventura Raceway is dark April 25. The VRA Sprint Cars are scheduled to compete at Bakersfield Speedway that night. The next race at Ventura will be May 2.
