LINCOLN, California — Tony Hunt of Lincoln, Calif. set a new track recorded and earned fast-time aboard his $14,000 spec-engined USAC Western Sprint Car at All American Speedway in Roseville, Calif on Saturday.
Hunt, the five-time USAC champion, continues to prove the speed and ability of the lower cost and lower horsepower option for the western series.
A strong crowd was on hand for the festivities on the ultra-fast one-third mile asphalt oval for the first of five appearances for the series in 2009.
Hunt was one of several drivers to unofficially break the track record during practice, recording a remarkable 12.271 lap around the high-banked oval.
Although the times dropped off in qualifying, Hunt managed to smash the previous track record and bring home a 12.464.
After finishing third in a very competitive heat race, Hunt prepared for the 50 lap feature.
Hunt charged from sixth for fourth at the start of the race, before his night was ended very prematurely with a non-engine related mechanical problem on lap eight.
He was forced to settle for 13th out of 14 entrants.
The car troubles marked back-to-back events where Hunt set the fast time only to be robbed of a strong finish in the feature.
Hunt will look to improve his status in the USAC Western States Sprint Car points on Saturday May 2 at the recently re-opened Stockton 99 Speedway in Stockton, Calif.
