MIRA LOMA, Ca — Scott Dodd in his #25 NASCAR Whelen Super Late Model took the checkered flags this weekend for his third career SLM win and the second this season. This was Dodd’s first win in the Lucas Oil Slick Mist Super Six Super Late Model Series. Dodd’s weekend didn’t start off looking like there was a possibility of a win. He spent most of the weekend under the car looking for the problem that had his car coming off the corners sideways with a terrible vibration.
The team changed three drive shafts before Matt Jackson from Jackson racecars suggested that we change the rear end. Jackson’s had a spare one so we changed it out and thankfully the Officials at Irwindale gave us a few laps to see if that fixed the problem. Sure enough it cured the problem. So we set our sites on qualifying with little track time.
Irwindale had the Super Late Models qualify after the National Anthem with the fans on hand to watch the qualifying action. Dodd was the 9th car to qualify and put the #25 on the top of charts with a lap time of 17.97. This fast time held up until Rip Michels qualified with a time of 17.91. Dodd and Michels were the only cars in the 17 seconds.
A fan rolled a dice and this put Dodd on the pole with an invert of two. The weekend was starting to look up for Dodd. On the start Michels jumped to the lead and Dodd fell in behind him and they ran in positions one and two until a yellow on lap 46. On lap 46 a car spun into the infield on the front straight and brought out the yellow flag. On the restart Michels had a mechanical problem and Dodd took over the lead and was able to pull away and take the checkered flag with a .44 second lead over second place car #71 Nick Joanides.
