Salt Lake City, Utah After a great night of Street Legal drag racing, spectators filed in to watch the Tint and Accessories Midnight Drags races at Rocky Mountain Raceways.
“The Midnight Drags are all about the people in the stands wanting to see their buddies race,” said Ron Craft, Drag Manager at Rocky Mountain Raceways.
It is also about the cars.
“We always have tons of cars show up to race and many of them are pretty nice and fast cars,” Craft said.
In the Street Legal race earlier in the evening, Jason Young, age 17 of West Valley City, Utah, won both the High School and the Heavy classes.
“Having the same person win two classes on the same day is a very rare occurrence on the drag strip,” Craft said.
Young, who will be graduating next week from Hunter High School in West Valley City, Utah, just started racing late last year.
“I came out and raced in the High School class last year for the last three races of the season and only have raced in one of the Street Legal races this year,” said Young.
Young races in a 1972 Chevy Nova that he found in the classifieds and purchased last year for $800. He put a new engine and transmission in it and got it ready to race.
“I worked on it all summer last year and all winter. Pretty much all of my time was working on the car.”
Other winners in the Street Legal races included Johnny Curtice (Wide Open Performance Diesel), Jeremy Budd (Sport Compact), Mike Wilson (Trucks), Benjamin McEwan (Motorcycle), Scott Randolph (TCR), Ricky Bax (Junior Major), Shawn Hart (Junior Minor) and Jared Jones (Junior Rookie).
In its thirteenth year, Rocky Mountain Raceways also hosts oval racing, motocross racing, monster trucks and drifting.
Rocky Mountain Raceways’ next events include the USRA Motocross race (May 30-31), AMA sanctioned RMR Super Oval race (May 30), and Summit Super Series ET drag race (June 5).
