DEFENDING CHAMPIONS RETURN TO VICTORY LANE AT SKAGIT SPEEDWAY

ALGER, Washington — It's been a trying season for the defending Associated Asphalt 410 Champion Barry Martinez. After destroying an entire car the first week of racing and missing week two while reassembling his machine, the two time class champion finally put the early season gremlins in his rear view mirror by leading all 25 laps of the 410 main event on round seven of the Foothills Toyota Tundra Series at Skagit Speedway. Aboard his Advanced Sprint Car & Toys for Trucks #66 J&J, Martinez would rocket out to the lead in the first turn, then planted his right rear on the cushion as he comfortably led every lap without incident. Second went to Eric Fisher in the J&R Paving #59 XXX. Third was Jason Solwold in the Shark Racing Engines #73 Maxim. Jesse Whitney was quick time in the Precise Machining #88 Eagle. Heat wins went to Martinez and Rick Fauver in the Reynolds/Fauver Racing #F1 Maxim.

Defending Budweiser 360 Series Champion Brian Kirkpatrick made his presence felt in a big time way: After a thrilling three car tango featuring himself, father Danny Kirkpatrick and Danielle Huson all battling for third place, BK used a lap 15 restart to clear himself of his two challengers and set sail for the front two cars, Jason Solwold and Brock Lemley respectively. After dispatching Lemley, Kirkpatrick would set sail for Solwold the race leader. A lap 22 red flag for Cory Chamberlain and Mike Melwicks would bunch the field up, and on the following restart, Kirkpatrick drove hard to the inside of Solwold in turn two, powering his way to past and into the lead where he would remain in his K&B Racing #5k XXX. Solwold would hang on for second in the C&S Construction #51 Maxim. Lemley brought home third in the Haling Seafoods #40 XXX. It was a good all around night for Kirkpatrick as he also set quick time. Heat race wins went to Melwicks in the CSA Transportation #20 Maxim, Alan Munn in the Munn Construction #42 XXX and Mike Harris in the Shark Racing Engines #44h XXX. Steve Parker won the B Main in the Construction Unlimited #23 Eagle.

Lyle Woods gave the K&B Racing team its second main win on the night, taking home the victory in the Cook Road Shell Sportsman Sprints. Woods inherited the lead after the two previous main leaders dropped out due to mechanical woes: Kelsey Carpenter led the initial start but dropped out on lap seven after his motor went up in smoke during yellow flag laps and on lap 14, race leader Paul Burdick was forced to the pit area during a red flag stoppage for Bill Rude & Devin Barnes when it was discovered that his header had burned through his seat belt. With Burdick banished to the pits for repairs, Woods took the point on brought home the win in his K&B Racing #12 Becker. The win gives K&B Racing the distinction of having owned race cars that won in three different divisions within the same year at Skagit Speedway (Shane Stewart in the 410s, Brian Kirkpatrick in the 360s, Woods in the Sportsman Sprints). Glen Reinstra finished second in the Right Way Plumbing #13gr XXX. Marc Schutte was third in the Rudy Blumenhagen owned #72 XXX. Heat race wins went to Woods and Bill Rude in the North Cascade Ford #33 Eagle.

Cory Swatzina is almost an unstoppable force in the Outlaw Hornet Division as he collected his third main event win of the season in his Carl's Towing sponsored #07, taking the lead on lap two and rolling away from the field on his way to the final flags on lap 17. Justin Sheridan collected a career best second place finish in his Conway Pub & Eatery #22. Defending Outlaw Hornet Champion Ben Gunderson ran third. Heat race wins went to Randy Geary and Sheridan.

Skagit Speedway wants to wish a speedy recovery to Bill Rude, who taken to a local medical facility following a rough crash in the Cook Road Shell Sportsman Sprints. We also want to wish flagman Kirby Hoyle a quick recovery, as he sustained an eye injury while flagging during time trials.

Round 8 of the Foothills Toyota Tundra Racing Series launches next week at Skagit Speedway, with racing starting at 7pm. Additionally, please visit www.skagitspeedway.com this week for a special announcement concerning a new event at the 2009 Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup.
