Salt Lake City, Utah -- Oval racers had fans on the edge of their seats at Rocky Mountain Raceways weekly ASA sanctioned Super Oval Series as Kody Swanson of Kingsburg, California set a new track record of 13.836 in the Young Automotive Group/USAC/SLVRA Sprint Cars.
“We are happy to be back here. It was great setting a new oval record. The car has been running great. I was hoping for a good finish and we did it!” said Swanson.
The previous record of 13.915 was held by Ryan Burdett in 2006.
“This is a good set of drivers. You have to help each other out in this class. I am excited to go out there and drive fast and have fun,” said Sprint car driver Jim Campbell, of Sandy, Utah.
Unfortunately several racers were unable to complete their main events. In the Hornet race, Jeff Barnett lost his front passenger tire and went sliding into the grass.
During the Maverik Modifieds Tod Alonza also ended up in the grass and had to be towed back to the pits.
“Wins are not easy. We cherish every win we get. I have a great crew and keep my chin up,” said Jason Aposhian, winner of the Maverik Modified class.
Oval classes that ran in the Super Oval ASA Weekly Racing Series included Young Automotive/USAC/SLVRA Sprint Cars, Western States Equipment Figure 8 Cars, Maverik Modifieds, Focus Midgets, Hornets and Figure 8 Trains.
The night’s winners included Kody Swanson (Young Automotive/USAC/SLVRA Sprint Cars), Travis Walker (Western States Equipment Figure 8 Cars), Jason Aposhian (Maverik Modifieds), Kipp Posey (Focus Midgets), Joshua Murray (Hornets).
In its thirteenth year, Rocky Mountain Raceways also hosts drag racing, motocross racing, monster trucks and drifting.
Rocky Mountain Raceways’ next events include the Street Legal Series (June 12), the Tint & Accessories Midnight Drags (June 12) and the Super Oval ASA Weekly Racing Series (June 13).
