UPLAND, California -- The American Speed Association (ASA) Speed Truck Challenge (STC) 2009 season has realized 5 different winners in as many races with 4 of these winners being first timers in the series. The 6th race of the season goes off at the TOYOTA Speedway at Irwindale this Saturday and the series may be presented with its 6th different winner in its 6th race of the season.
March 7th at Lucas Oil I-10 Speedway saw two-time ASA STC Champion Darren Young in the #18 H&R Springs / PGX Motorsports Chevy Colorado take the win followed by first time winner and 14 year old Cole Cabrera in the #53 Ag Source Magazine Dodge Dakota at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on April 18th. On to the Verve! Havasu 95 Speedway on April 25th with another 14 year old and first time winner taking the top honors with Donny St. Ours at the wheel of the #16 Greg Biffle Motorsports Development Driver / Race Party Decorations / King Taco / K&N Filters Chevy Colorado.
The road course race at Firebird International Raceway on May 9th presented the #1 Jeff Catlin, DJ Safety / Sikwidit Clothing / Driven Auto Parts in the winners circle and this win is also the first for the former crew chief in the ASA STC. May 30th at TOYOTA Speedway at Irwindale saw yet another 14 year old driver in the winners circle. Jeremiah Wagner in the #77 Wagner Homes / Schlage Locks / Frazee Paints Chevy Colorado took the exciting win which has been touted as one of the best Speed Truck races ever.
The 2009 racing season has yet to see some of the finest drivers in the series get a win. Points leader Randel King in the #35 Luke’s Transmission / Jegs’ / COP 4x4 Dodge Dakota has two second place finishes and will be on top of his game at Irwindale for that first win in 2009. Todd McLauchlan in the #38 Institutional Cabinets and Millworks / Airgas / Havasu Air Center Chevy Colorado took home two wins at Irwindale last year and is ready for his first win in the 2009 season. The #71 Joey Licata, G2 On Line Graphic Service / United Nissan Speed Truck has set fast times, won trophy dashes, finished second, but has yet to capture his first win. Jason Black in the #9 Golden Lane Ventures / Empire Power systems returned to the ASA STC at the May 30th race at Irwindale taking home a 4th place finish and is another driver that could win at Irwindale on June 13th as he has won there before.
Other notables are Josh Goshen in the #04 Baker Commodities / Gatorz Eyewear / Quality First Concrete / Merv Griffin Enterprises Chevy Colorado and team mate Jamie Bennett in the #02 Bennett Transport Chevy Colorado both knocking on the door for their first wins in the ASA STC.
Chris Birdsong’s #46 Wagner Homes Ford Ranger, Freightliner of Arizona / Mobil 1 / Western Star / Renegade Trailers / Sport Truck of Arizona sponsored Speed Trucks with fast time qualifier Taylor Cuzick at the wheel of the #51 and Hard Charger award winner Chris Snyder in the #0 Speed Trucks are starting to show their talents in the ASA STC and will be atop the leader boards.
2003 and 2004 two-time ASA STC Champion #91 Lee Hatch returns to the series at Irwindale on June 13th and Lee is certainly no stranger to the winners circle as he has won at Irwindale on at least 5 occasions in his Speed Truck. Shawn Steele in the #25 Speed Truck, recent graduate of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s department is also back for this Irwindale race and is no stranger to victory circle.
After 5 races and with so many talented drivers, the series could see any one of them in the winners circle at Irwindale. The qualifying times from first to last at the oval track races are split by only four tenths of a second this year. The ASA STC has always been known as a competitive racing series and to have qualifying and race times as close as they are, any driver certainly has a chance at the top spot each race.
The Championship Points battle is tight with 1st place #35 Randel King at 272, 2nd place #71 Joey Licata at 269, 3rd place #53 Cole Cabrera at 254, 4th place #1 Jeff Catlin at 251, 5th place #77 Jeremiah Wagner at 246, followed by #16 Donny St. Ours at 242, #38 Todd McLauchlan at 228, #02 Jamie Bennett at 224, #18 Darren Young at 214 and #0 Chris Snyder at 210 rounding out the Top 10. With 64 points for a win, the Top 10 could change dramatically after the TOYOTA Speedway at Irwindale race this Saturday.
The 2009 Rookie of the Year battle is hot with Jeremiah Wagner #77 at 18 points, Cole Cabrera #53 at 17 and Josh Goshen #04 at 14 points. This battle for the top spot has changed ownership many times between these 14 year old drivers and Wagner and Cabrera both have wins. After problems for Goshen at Irwindale on May 30th and if he can do what he expects this weekend with a new Van Gordon engine, the top spot will switch hands again. This is a very tight and great Rookie of the Year battle to keep your eyes on through the remaining six races.
Guess their slogan “ASA We Build Champions” bodes well for this 13 year old series.
