VENTURA, Calif — Jimmy Wood, who has turned Ventura Raceway into his personal oval of dreams, returns to the Ventura County Fairgrounds facility this weekend to highlight a night of motorcycle racing on Saturday, June 20.
The Ventura Raceway Motorcycle Races night will feature 14 classes of cycles zipping around the famed Ventura oval and through the Ventura Moto in the oval’s infield. The 17 classes of competitors will include quad racers.
The flat trackers zip around Ventura’s quarter-mile with one foot on the ground, the rear wheel sliding sideways and the handlebars guiding the front tire. The motocrossers do all that, then launch themselves over jumps and around tightly banked turns before coming back on the big track and starting over again.
Wood has won the last two main events in the Pro Modern Open class at Ventura, using a smooth style that fits the track. A versatile professional, Wood finished fourth in the GTU class of the May 30 Super Bike Challenge road race, on pavement, at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah.
Wood’s Ventura victories have come on Sept. 27, 2008 and April 20 of this year. The second win came after Wood passed Ventura’s Kayl Kolkman to get the lead on the third lap. The April 20 race drew an entry list of 116 entrants.
The pit gate opens at noon, when competitor registration begins. Practice starts at 3 p.m. and the spectator gates open at the same time. Racing starts at 5 p.m. Ticket prices for the special event are $18 for general admission, $15 for senior citizens and military. Kids 12 years and under get in free when accompanied by a paying adult.
More information about the event and the classes open for entry is available at www.venturaraceway.com.
