Modesto’s Kyle Gottula grabbed the lead over Manteca’s Ross Strmiska in the Western Late Model 50-lap feature following a lap 33 restart and cruised to his fourth victory of the season. Merced’s Carlos Vieira finished third.
Gottula had grabbed the lead on lap 19 from Bakersfield’s Brennan Newberry and held it until Coulterville’s Matt Erickson spun on his own to bring out a yellow caution on lap 28. Strmiska, who was looking for his fourth straight win at Madera, lined up outside of Gottula for the restart and took the lead at that point when Gottula wiggled just a bit after Vieira touched him going into turn #1.
The win enabled Gottula to increase his lead over Strmiska in the battle for the 2009 track championship to a 235 to 217 margin.
Modesto’s Dennis Saunders Jr. picked up his third win of the season in the American Limited Stock Car division. With the win Saunders takes over the division points lead by a slim one point (170 –169) over Atwater’s Jason Aguirre, who failed to finish the 30-lap feature after being involved in a crash with defending champion Howard Holden of Clovis on lap 13
Other winners at Madera on Saturday included Fresno’s Donnie Large in the Modified Super Toyotas, Fresno’s Jason Kerns in the Toyota Sedans, Modesto’s JD Silva in the Hornets, Ripon’s Angelo Queirolo in the Hornets, Manteca’s Josh Gomes in the Baby Grands and Lincoln’s Danny Allen in the Mini Cups.
