Salt Lake City, Utah -- Racing fans were ecstatic to see Brett Harris set a new track record at Rocky Mountain Raceways’ IHRA Nitro Nationals.
Brett Harris, of Kaysville, Utah set the new track record for Nostalgia Front Engine Top Fuel Dragster of 5.884 ET at 243.11 miles per hour.
“We came here hoping to break the record again. The car has been running really great,” said Harris.
Jack Harris said “The kid doing well. He is a chip off the old block.” Jack is Brett’s father who held the Nostalgia Front Engine Top Fuel record before Brett broke it earlier this year.
Shawn Hart and Jed Dubach also celebrated family wins as they both won in each of their classes. Eleven year-old Hart is Dubach’s nephew. Hart won in the Junior Dragster Minor race and Jed Dubach placed in the top two both Friday and Saturday for the Top Dragster.
“Winning tonight felt really good. This is my second win this year. I have been racing for four years now,” said Hart.
“We don’t know any other way of life. Some families go boating or hunting but our family races,” said Dubach.
Headlining the event was six of the world’s fastest machines. The jet semi “X-Treme Machine,” is the drag racing world’s most powerful machine with 18, 000 horsepower and 50 foot flames shooting from the back “X-Treme Machine” was easily a crowd favorite. This is the first time “X-Treme Machine” has been in Salt Lake City.
“It has been wonderful here at Nitro Nationals. There is no way to explain the feeling when I get into the truck,” said driver Joe “Pepi” Urban.
The J-79 jet equipped Freightliner throttled down the quarter mile in 8.064 ET at 189.97 miles per hour.
“IHRA Nitro Nationals in Salt Lake City was a brand new experiment and a brand new concept. We will be coming back soon,” said IHRA President Aaron Polburn.
“Nitro Nationals has been great today. It has been amazing to go into the pit area and talk with the drivers and see the cars up close,” said Carrie Newman of Provo, Utah.
In addition to drag racing, Rocky Mountain Raceways hosts oval, motocross, monster trucks and drifting.
Rocky Mountain Raceways next events include the Summit Super Series (July 3,) Copper Cup Classic (July 4,) and Plaza Cycle Motocross Park Race (July 10.)
