DEFENDING CLASS CHAMPIONS WIN SPRINT CAR MAINS AT SKAGIT SPEEDWAY

ALGER, Washington — It was a good night to be a defending champion in the sprint car divisions at Skagit Speedway. In the Budweiser 360 class, Brian Kirkpatrick took his K&B Racing #7k XXX to victory lane after inheriting the lead on lap six. Travis Rutz led the first five laps, but slowed to a stop on the sixth circuit with an ignition box problem. This handed the lead to Kirkpatrick, the defending 360 champion, who led every lap that follow en route to his second victory of '09. Second went to Brock Lemley in the Haling Seafood #40 XXX, third to Alan Munn in the Munn Construction #42 XXX. Kirkpatrick also set quick time. Rutz got his ignition fixed and worked his way all the way back to fourth in his Rutz Racing #8 XXX. Heat race wins went to Rod Perkins in the Classic Rock 92.9 #69 XXX and Lemley.

Kelsey Carpenter, defending division champion and current points leader, has been arguably the most dominant driver at Skagit Speedway in 2009, and he went a long way to accentuating that point by winning his fifth main event of the season in the Cook Road Shell Sportsman Sprints, leading to the pack to the final flags by 4.9 seconds in his Dri-Eaz #27c XXX. Bill Rude was second in his North Cascade Ford #33 Eagle. Third was Lyle Woods in his K&B Racing #12 Becker. In a rare qualifying session for the Sportsman Sprints, Carpenter lowered his own track record in the class by almost a half second. Heat race wins went to Michael Bollinger in the Sunworks Tanning #73 Maxim and Woods.

The Outlaw Hornet main was a thrilling affair, featuring four different leaders. On a lap 14 restart, Freddy Vela took the lead from Ben Gunderson and raced away with Wade Swatzina in tow. On lap 18, Vela left just enough room on the top side of turn one for Swatzina to get a clean run, and Swatzina did just that, powering around Vela for the lead and the win two laps later. Vela finished second with Rick Young bringing home third. Heat race wins went to Gunderson and James Bundy.

Skagit Speedway fans were treated to a 4 cylinder demo derby after the main events with Nick Williams being crowned the eventual winners in his Volvo DL. Once the demo cars were cleared, Mr Dizzy performed his jump of doom, clearing two motorhomes and six compact cars in his Buick muscle car towing a fiberglass boat successfully.

Skagit Speedway is taking the July 4th weekend off, and returning with Mid Season Championship night and the Les Schwab Fireworks Extravaganza on July 11th. Track promoter Steve Beitler is promising the most spectacular fireworks display in track history, so you'll want to get to the track early to get your seat saved. Ticket information is available online at www.skagitspeedway.com
