NOTES OF INTEREST:
*** Sean Woodside has led the most laps in the 11 NASCAR Winston West Series stand-alone races this year. He has kept the golden West Motorsports entry out front for nearly one-fourth of the laps run, leading 485 of the 1,952 possible.
*** Butch Gilliland has completed the most laps in the stand-alone events. He has piloted the Stroppe Motorsports Ford for 1,935 circuits of the 1.952 run so far this season.
*** Gilliland has the highest average finish so far. His average after 11 regular races is 3.4.
*** Gilliland has the most number of Busch Pole Awards so far, with three. Woodside and Gary Smith each have two.
*** Ford, with 77 points and five wins, has extended its lead in the battle for the Manufacturers' Championship. Chevrolet has 70 points and four wins, while Pontiac has 62 points and two wins.
*** Three NASCAR Winston West Series drivers celebrate birthdays during October. Sean Woodside turns 27 on Oct. 16, Tony Taranto turns 38 on Oct 17 and St James Davis will become 54 on Oct 24. TURNING TO MESA MARIN
*** This is the second of two visits by the NASCAR Winston West Series to Mesa Marin Raceway this season. The first race this season on the high-banked track was won by Gilliland.
*** Bill Sedgwick has the most NWWS victories at Mesa Marin Raceway, with six visits to victory lane.
*** Sedgwick also tops the list with the most Busch Pole Awards on the popular West Coast track. Six times he turned in the fastest time.
*** Previous NWWS winners at Mesa Marin Raceway who are expected to enter this event include Sedgwick, Gilliland, and Larry Gunselman.
*** Gilliland and Jack Sellers have started the most series races at Mesa Marin Raceway. Each has appeared in 22 events there.
*** Chevrolet appears to be the dominant car at Mesa Marin Raceway, winning 15 of the series races. A Ford won the most recent, however, and a Pontiac won the race before that one.

*** One-fourth of the NASCAR Winston West Series races at Mesa Marin Raceway have been won the driver starting from the pole position-including the most recent, Butch Gilliland in May of this year. Bobby Allison won after starting 24th in 1980. He was the only winner to start out of the top 10.![]()
