Colo. Spgs., CO. Burney is alive and well in West Sacramento, CA. thank you. He's still going to college at California State University-Sacramento. Majoring in Business Administration and maintaining a 3.6 grade point average. He's also working out at a local gym in case they ever start racing again.
It's been so long since the NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Series has had a race that it's hoped this will bring you up to date.
If you remember, Burney is the driver for the Colorado Springs, CO. based Bonicelli Racing Team, which owns the #87 WaveShield - Western Funding Pontiac Gran Prix's. Way back the first part of February, the Southwest Series ran a race at Phoenix International Raceway they called the NAPA Auto Parts "Winter Heat" presented by Bosch.
Burney qualified 4th out of a bunch of cars (56 acutally) and finished 17th out of a field of 42 racers. He also finished 2nd among the six 'rookies'. Despite his finish, he and the race crew were happy with the results, since he was running 4th for the first 30 laps until he got spun out, dropping him back to 24th. He also brought the car back in one piece.
The race car? It's doing fine. Dennis Alderman, mechanic, fabricator, transport driver, etc., replaced the left rear quarter panel that got hurt at Phoenix and the rest of the team has been puttering with the chassis and engine.
All in all, in case you were wondering, it looks good to go to Cajon Speedway this weekend. Dennis and Roger Otto, another mechanic, will probably be leaving the Springs sometime Thursday for the 1300 mile haul to El Cajon.
