This Saturday, July 11th, NCMA Sprint Cars return for their second week in a row along with the Legends of the Pacific and their always large car counts. Also on the ticket will be the ALSC/Street Stocks, Mini-Stocks/Mini-Trucks, Basically-4-Cylinders, and, for their initial visit to Stockton 99 Speedway, the Figure-8’s. This should be some truly exciting racing for the entire family to enjoy.
Last Friday, the NCMA Sprints were at the track before a crowd of nearly 1,500 and put on a marvelous high-speed thriller. The top four cars were so close at times you couldn’t tell where one ended and the other began. Jerry Kobza of Folsom grabbed the lead on lap 9, but had to continuously look back as the racing was that tight. Kobza finally made his way to Victory Lane, but not before some fantastic racing took place. This week expect much more of the same as racing greats, Steve and Ed Amador of Patterson, David Goodwill of Napa, Gary Koster of Woodland and many more return to battle it out on the slick, quarter-mile at Stockton.
The Legends of the Pacific return after some great racing a week ago. As always, you can expect “Fearless” Fred Clement of Stockton to be on the grid and ready to go along with the rest of the Clement gang, including In-Clement, “Duct-Tape” Dave Ball. Also, Stockton favorites, Dawn and Donny Darter will be on hand to do what they do best. Last week was a battle-royal of racing for this Division, but, when the dust settled, Phillip Morrissey of Tahoe City was still standing, and, at the top of the podium. You can always expect the unexpected when these scaled-down models come to town with plenty of thrills and spills to quench the thirst of every racing fan’s particular needs.
The Points Race is drawing tighter with each passing week in the ALSC/Street Stock Division. Lodi’s Jeff Ahl continues to hold down the top spot with Aaron Coonfield of Riverbank following close in his shadow a mere 23 points back. The “Ol’ Man” Pete Anderson Sr. sits another 49 points behind in third. Coonfield has been hot as of late winning his fifth race of the year a week ago, and with Race #14 fast approaching, the points picture will become much more clear in the coming weeks.
The Mini-Stocks/Mini-Trucks are set to go once again. After a month off, these drivers can’t wait to hit the asphalt. Last time out, Terry Shannon went wire to wire to capture his first victory which vaulted him to the Points Lead. Sitting in second, only 3 points back, Rodney Oliver will be on hand to try to win his third of the year. Andrew Blake is third on the podium another 3 points behind. Look for the intensity to pick up in this Division as the car count continues to grow.
Dawn Darter of Manteca returns this week in the Basicall-4-Cylinders Division to try to avenge a disappointing second place finish last week after leading most of the race. She held off JD Silva as long as she could, but Silva proved to have the better setup on the night. Richard Hull sits atop the charts in first followed closely by Silva with only three points separating the top two. Another six points back in the third spot, Darter seems to get better every time she shows up at the track.
And, of course, what would Saturday night racing be without including the Bombers. Ben Lewis II of Stockton still controls his destiny at the top of the charts. “Wild” Russell Johnson Jr. can’t seem to cut into Lewis’ lead as he continues to trail by 56 points from that second rung. Rounding out the top three, Mike Massone sits another 66 points behind Johnson. Look for more of the same great racing this week.
