TACOMA, Washington — The Graham based HayWire Racing team plan a rare outing this weekend as they double down for the Limited Late Model race at Southsound Speedway in Tenino, Washington, entering both of their Late Model drivers in the same race.
After more than a decade apart, both Tommy Rasmussen and “Terrible” Tim McDougald will take to the track together, Tommy driving the #92 Dad’s Garage / RPM Sales & Service / Dan’s Automotive / Ringers Gloves / Mauritsen Enterprises / HWR Engines Pontiac Grand Prix and “Terrible” Tim in the #68 KMB Design / Hargis Engineers / Print-NW / Ringers Gloves / Cornwell Tools Toyota Camry.
Rasmussen has made himself a regular at Southsound Speedway this season, running most all of the season in the Late Model class in his black primary car. Rasmussen currently sits 5th in the Championship Standings, a position he has had to work for all year. This time he takes to the 3/8 mile oval purely for fun, bringing his secondary car out for a little enjoyment with his brother.
McDougald has had a rather short season thus far, having his season opener rained out when the Limited Late Model Racing Series (LLMRS) visited Ephrata Raceway Park and then suspension problems ended his run at Port Angeles during LLMRS competition there. McDougald’s history at Southsound Speedway is about as short, having only raced in competition there once in his career, roughly 12 years ago before the track was reconfigured. “I’m a little apprehensive,” said McDougald. “I have not really run there before. I ran a Street Stock there way back in the day, but this is quite a bit different. I’m confident the guys will give me a good car, but I have mixed emotions about the rule package there. It really doesn’t favor my car at all; it favors the full fab coil over cars. So I’m concerned about having enough speed to even keep up. But who knows, maybe my luck I’ve had at tracks I’ve never raced on will carry over there too.”
“Terrible” Tim will also be the only Toyota in the field, being one of only a small group that carries the Toyota banner in the Pacific Northwest. “I’m happy to be carrying the torch for Toyota around here,” said “Terrible” Tim. “Some one has to, right? Why not me? Besides, it gets a reaction, good or bad, it gets a reaction. I like to be different, set my self apart from the crowd and I hope that some of the younger fans will cheer for us too. A lot of them drive Toyotas, so it gives them something to connect with, something to cheer for.”
With both cars on the track, the small family run team from Graham, Washington hopes that this will increase the odds that one of them will be holding the trophy in the end. “My brother has been so great over the years helping me with my car,” said “Terrible” Tim. “I can’t wait to get on the track with him and have some fun. I hope one of us wins it. That would be really cool to be able to congratulate my brother on the track and I’m sure he feels the same way about me. Who knows, every dog has his day, right? Why not one of us?”
Look for the HayWire Racing team’s two-pronged attack to make its way through the competition as they look to have one of their drivers holding the trophy at Southsound Speedway this Saturday night, July 18th.
