RIVERSIDE, California — Riverside, California’s David Cardey will be back behind the wheel of the ITI Performance Motorsports Viper Chassis/ITI powered red #38 when the USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series returns to Southern California’s Perris Auto Speedway this Saturday night, August 1st.
The series makes its return after a month off and the 33-year old Cardey has a point to prove. At the last event on July 4th, Cardey, who was coming off his second win of the season, had a rough night. Things started out bright enough when the veteran star qualified second fastest in the 33 car field. He placed third in his 10-lap heat race and lined up inside the fourth row for the 30-lap holiday main event. That is where the good news ended as he had an early exit from the feature when he sheared the pinion gear, coasted to a stop on the front straightway and ended up finishing 21st.
The disappointing result was Cardey’s first finish outside the top five since February 28th. Heading into the last race, Cardey, who is the only driver in the series with more than one main event win in 2009, was the point leader. His premature departure in the main saw him drop to third overall in the standings. However, he is only 13 points behind the leader heading into Saturday’s race and he will put up a determined effort to get back to the top spot.
