LINCOLN, California — Five-time USAC champion Tony Hunt claimed his third pole of the 2009 and put together a fifth place finish in the 50 lap feature, Saturday, at All American Speedway in Roseville, Calif.
Hunt set the one-lap standard for the night with a 12.943 second lap around the one-third mile oval in qualifying. All American Speedway was the site of Hunt’s race win on June 27 and is his home track.
After finishing third in his heat race, Hunt started sixth in the main event.
Hunt jumped forward to fourth by the second lap of the race, then was entangled in a heated battle with JoJo Helberg for third.
He took over the third position by lap 17 but was shuffled back to sixth in lapped traffic on lap 22.
Two laps later, Hunt continued his busy night of back and forth racing by moving into the fifth position. Hunt battled on to the finish for a satisfying fifth place effort.
The top-five allowed Hunt to move into fourth in the points standings with seven rounds of racing remaining in 2009. Hunt also leads the Earl’s fast-qualifier points program.
The USAC Western Sprint Car Series returns to action August 15 at Madera Speedway in Madera, Calif.
