UNDERWOOD’S CHARGE TO THE FRONT KEYS FAIR VICTORY

VENTURA, California — Camarillo’s Brent Underwood worked his way through the field and won the Sport Compact Rear Wheel Drive main event at Ventura Raceway. It was Underwood’s seventh victory of the season and his first career victory at the Ventura County Fair.

The annual Fair races are the most prestigious of Raceway’s season. So what’s it like to win a Fair race?

“Pressure and carnage,” Underwood said. “Pressure because it’s the one everyone wants to win. Carnage because everyone wants to win it.”

Underwood started 11th in the 15-car field but he led before the race reached the halfway point of the 20-lap distance. James Brown of Ventura led the first nine laps.

Santa Maria’s Danny Lauer won a wild IMCA Modified feature, his fourth win this year, and Kenny Wiley, of Sunland, won the NMRA TQ Midget main. Santa Paula’s Darren Gunnell was declared the winner of the Sport Compact Front Wheel Drive feature after the top finishers, Mike Frazier and Joel Chavez Jr., were disqualified after post-race technical inspection.

Oxnard’s Travis Riley won a crowd-pleasing Demolition Derby.
