OPEN-WHEELERS OVERTAKE MERIDIAN ON SATURDAY

MERIDIAN, Idaho — Open-wheel racing fans will get a double dose of action Saturday night at ASA-sanctioned Meridian Speedway as the Intermountain Vintage Sprintcars make another stop and the Winged Sprints drivers continue their wild championship pursuit.

Non-winged sprints also will be on hand along with Super Stocks and Jr. Stingers.

General admission is $10 for adults, $7.50 for senior citizens, $6 for children ages 7-11, and children 6 and younger get in free.

Advance tickets are available at NAPA Auto Parts locations in Meridian and Kuna for fans who don't want to stand in line Saturday night.

Gates open at 4 p.m. with qualifying at 5 p.m. and racing at 6:30 p.m. For more information about the speedway, call (208) 888-2813 or log on to www.meridianspeedway.com.

Don Newman, who is co-operator of Meridian Speedway with Al Russell and Adam Nelson, owns Intermountain Vintage Sprintcars organization. He won the main event at the series’ Meridian July 25 stop.

In the Winged Sprints class, Nampa, Idaho, drivers Chris Ratterree and Cory Lockwood continue to duel at the top. Ratterree ran away from the field the last time out and now owns a 28-point lead over Lockwood for season championship.

Meridian, Idaho’s Johnny Giesler still rules the Non-winged Sprints over fellow Meridian driver Wyatt King.

Another young driver, Phillip Zubizareta of Boise, Idaho, will try to protect a slim lead of Nampa’s Dennis Brodigan in the Super Stocks. Zubizareta leads Brodigan by 15 points, and Boise’s Gale Carter lurks just six points behind Brodigan in third place.

At 13 years old, Andrew Clark of Meridian is one of the youngest drivers on the track. He paces the Jr. Stingers standings by 20 points over second-place Chance Davis of Emmett.
