Nathan Wulff of Escondido was on a rail in the Foods 4 Less Super Late Model feature at Irwindale Speedway Saturday night. Wulff showed incredible poise and finesse as he piloted his #18 Free Builders Supply Monte Carlo to his first Super late Model victory. Wulff's win backed up his second place finish on March 17th proving it wasn't "beginners luck" in the Super Late Model season opener at what is arguably the nations finest 1/2 mile racing facility.
A rookie to the Super Late Models, Wulff was 2nd quick qualifier backing up his pole taking effort two weeks ago. Tommy Fry's pea pick brought a three car inversion, putting Wulff outside row one with Sean Woodside to his left, for the main. At the green flag the #45 of Woodside took a quick lead but the #18 of Wulff was in the lead by the time they crossed the line of lap one. Wulff led all 75 laps. Wulff built a lead of about three and a half seconds with several lappers between him and second place #74 Tommy Fry. That cushion was lost in the final few laps when a caution set up a green, white, checker finish with lapped traffic restarting behind the lead lap cars. As the leaders came out of turn four on the final lap the #74, down low, had a half car advantage but couldn't hold on as Wulff in his #18 took the win in an exciting side by side finish.
"We couldn't be happier." Wulff said, "Now, we need to keep up the momentum, with this kind of start we're hoping we can take Rookie of the Year honors by seasons end." He also discussed long term goals as competing in the Southwest Tour and eventually driving in the Craftsman Truck division.
After several years of karting, three years with the Ultra Wheels Spec Truck (now Super Truck) Series and now experiencing the heavier and faster Super Lates, Wulff's goal seem achievable.
