Bob Farmer’s REF Motorsports team will have a winning combination this Saturday at Mesa Marin Raceway. His #4 car was first to the finish line last March, taking the first win of the season and starting the string of 4 top 5 finishes for the team.
Jon Nelson was top qualifier in a field of over 40 NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Series competitors in his #80 car, beginning a 7 race / 2 TQ’s / 2 Wins racing season. The #4 car edged Nelson out of the win with a last lap pass. This year, Nelson will be driving the #4 Ultra Wheels, Stick Only Transmissions, Maropulos Racing Engines, Speedway Engineering car and expecting to once again get around the ˝ mile track in record time.
Farmer states that he is, “hoping that we can start another string of top 5 finishes.” He knows that Nelson can drive given the right equipment, given that Nelson got the #4 car around the track quick enough to take the 5th place qualifying time at Cajon two weeks ago, but was forced out of the race due to a broken rear end.
Nelson has a lot of time at Mesa Marin, both on the track as a driver and on the sidelines helping other drivers. Nelson has helped many drivers learn the basics in racing through his innovation, The Ultra Wheels Super Truck Series. Nelson designed a truck, built and sold 12 of them starting what was called the Spec Trucks in 1996. The series is now the Ultra Wheels Super Truck Series. Several drivers have taken what they knew, added what they learned from Nelson and the truck series, launching themselves into other divisions.
Nelson is unique in that he can understand and communicate racing from a drivers standpoint as well as a fabricator, crew chief angle. This combined with the decades of knowledge in REF Motorsports makes them a very good team indeed.![]()
