VENTURA, California — Quartz Hill driver Steve Conrad won the Sprint Car division’s main event at Ventura Raceway Saturday after losing the lead at the midway point in the 30lap event.
Conrad led the first 15 circuits around the Ventura oval, lost the top spot to Rick Hendrix after the 15th lap and then went back in front on the 25th lap and led the rest of the way. Troy Rutherford (Ojai) finished second and Hendrix (Palmdale) was third.
The other winners at Ventura included Jeff Culver (Lompoc) in the Senior Sprints, Randy McGraw (Ojai) in the IMCA Modifieds and Robert Hansen (Simi Valley) in the Senior Dwarf Cars. Darren Gunnell (Santa Paula) was the Rear Wheel Drive winner in the Sport Compact race and Trevor Fitzgibbon (Camarillo) was the Front Wheel Drive winner. Ethan Quinn (Santa Clarita) was the Junior Focus Midget winner and Robert DelGaudio (Moorpark) was the Go-Kart winner.
“I knew I had a good car,” Conrad said when asked about losing the lead to Hendrix. “I thought, ‘Well, just keep your head down and maybe we’ll get a chance. The opportunity came up and we won.’”
The victory was Conrad’s first at Ventura this season.
The eight-division race card drew 135 entries.
