The No. 34 Wynn’s Monte Carlo returns to the well-known black, orange and purple paint scheme for this weekend’s Coors Light 125. The event at Bakersfield is the third race this season for the NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Series.
Doug McCoun, driver of the car is uncharacteristically sitting 12th in the standings. Don’t be surprised if you see a shake-up in the points, as this is a track that McCoun has shown a lot of muscle on and an opportunity for him to make a move up.
Not surprisingly, this gifted driver is one of the odds on favorites to for a podium finish. Will some drivers will use the pedal on the right to win the race, McCoun knows the pedal on the left is just as important. Find out why in the interview below.
And remember this is a fantastic opportunity to visit Mesa Marin Raceway and meet the Stars of the great Southwest!
RacingWest: Have you finished your taxes yet? If you get a refund how will you spend or invest it? Doug McCoun: I am getting a refund but will not be using it for anything exciting - just paying some bills.
RW: How did you get started in racing?
DM: When I was a kid, my dad sponsored a couple of cars at Watsonville Speedway and he used to take us out to watch the races. When I became old enough to drive, I was fortunate that he supported me. I started racing in Watsonville when I was 16, and my dad has continued to help me all these years.
RW: What do you enjoy most about Mesa Marin Raceway?
DM: It's a fast track and it affords the opportunity to pass.
RW: What is the key to passing at Mesa Marin Raceway?
DM: The first key to passing is being able to out-brake the other car. You also have to be able to make the car turn in the middle and get a good bite off the corner.
RW: What does it take to stay out of trouble at Mesa?
DM: A good spotter and some luck.
RW: What is your strategy for a win?
DM: To lead the last lap!
RW: What is the best part of racing the Featherlite Southwest Tour?
DM: I really enjoy getting to travel, see other parts of the country and meet fans from all over.
RW: Where can the fans find you at Mesa Marin for driver cards, autographs,
appearances, etc.?
DM: We're always available in the pits after the race, and if there is an
autograph session in the stands before the race, we'll be there, too.
