DARREN CROCKER WINS NIGHT 1 OF THE PEPSI LABOR DAY WEEKEND SHOOT OUT

The 2009 season at Colorado National Speedway is winding down to a close. Only 4 nights of racing remain, making these last few bouts crucial to the point leaders in every division. After missing more than 20% of this year’s main events thanks to weather related cancelations, every driver at Colorado National Speedway is eager to make each and every one of these last few races count. The situation couldn’t be better for action-hungry NASCAR race fans. As the season nears closer to its end, the competition becomes more unpredictable at every turn around the oval.

It was a Late Model tie breaker bout for the Pepsi Labor Day weekend shoot out. Both Cris Muhler and Bruce Yackey hit the asphalt with 585 points a piece. Bruce Yackey had the advantage to break away for the point lead, starting on the outside of row one alongside #78 Darren Crocker, while Cris Muhler started way back in 12th. #11 Darren Robertson started in 10th place and kept the action going as he maneuvered through the field, taking 2nd behind the unstoppable Darren Crocker. By lap 28 Crocker had a 10 car length lead over Robertson, but anyone could see that Robertson was closing the gap. The only question was whether or not he had enough race left to catch up. By lap 38, Crocker had found his second wind and further widened the gap between himself and Robertson, sealing his first win of the season.

The fan club of #26 Nick “the quick” Martinez was on hand to scream their heads off during the 20 lap Figure 8 A Main. And scream they did as Nick emerged from behind and made his way into the spotlight and stayed there through 2 yellows and 19 laps, battling off #22 Joe Matlock. It wasn’t until the two cars came around the very last lap that Matlock and #23 “Big Al” Duran slipped past Martinez via the inside as they raced into lapped traffic. Joe Matlock passed the checkered first followed by Big Al and Nick “the quick” Martinez.

Too many super stocks to count made it to the 25 lap A Main. #39 John Nugent started on the pole and held his lead through 10 caution filled laps. Bad luck befell him when he got sideways coming around turn 4, leaving the door open for #17 Jeremy Barclay to take the lead. Before long, point leaders #46 Rick Lothert and #92 Alex Grasso had come up behind Barclay, ready to duke it out for the win. Try as they might, no one could stop Jeremy from taking his rightful place in the winner’s circle. He passed the finish line first followed by Rick Lothert and Alex Grasso.

Grand American Modifieds always put on a great show here at Colorado National Speedway, and tonight was no exception. The boys put on a clean race with #77 Jeff Hansen leading the way until #18 Ed Vecchiarelli stole the lead via the outside on a double file restart (brought on by oil on the track). Point leader #08 Jace Hansen wasn’t far behind, moving into 2nd as Jeff Hansen fell to 3rd place. Ed took the win followed by Jace Hansen in 2nd and Jeff Hansen in 3rd.

Gary Land and Frank Denning had a point battle of their own for the Modified Coupe A Main. A win by Denning would rocket him from 2nd in points to make him the current point leader. And win he did, by the length of the front stretch.
