COTTAGE GROVE, Oregon — It was a long week for Roger Crockett of Medford with a lot of miles being put on the hauler. The SKS Racing #11 KPC 360 c.i. Sprint Car chassis team traveled to northern California on Saturday and ventured north to Washington only to be idled by wet weather on both Sunday and Monday and returned to his hometrack on Tuesday.
The whole weekend started with the team venturing to Yreka, California’s Siskiyou Motor Speedway for the Alturas Desert Rose Casino Classic to look for their seventh win in a row and take home the $2,000 prize money as well. It was the venue’s first Sprint Car race in several years and brought the attention of a total of fourteen tough teams despite the threatening weather.
For Crockett the night started off great with him setting fast time of the night over the entire field. After some rough luck in the heat race he definitely was looking forward to make a statement in the main event. Starting in the second row of the thirty-lap affair the #11 went straight to the top and took over the lead by the second lap.
As the laps winded down nothing seemed to stop Crockett had no obstacles, as the cautions couldn’t hold him back from lapping the field. By the end of it all fifth place could claim that he was the last car on the lead lap.
For Crockett it was his twenty-first victory of the 2009 campaign and his seventh straight feature victory. The rest of the weekend was rained out as the team never made it out of the state of Oregon as both Sunday and Monday’s action at the Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Washington was rained out.
The most recent night of action was last Tuesday with the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series at the Cottage Grove Speedway in the 410 c.i. engine. Crockett was able to set tenth fastest out of the large field and win his heat race. Starting fourth in the forty lap feature Crockett got as high as third until a shock broke making his car very difficult to transfer the weight in the corners and made it harder then usual to turn.
Crockett heads now to the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, California for the coveted 56th Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions, which is the largest paying 410 Sprint Car event on the west coast. Last year he was fortunate enough to make the staked A Main event in the Saturday night finale. This year he has elected to participate on Friday’s qualifying night event hoping to accumulate enough points to automatically make the A feature on Saturday night.
