VENTURA, California — Troy Rutherford did what he could to keep the chase for the Ventura Raceway Sprint Car championship alive, winning Saturday’s main event.
Rutherford, the Ojai racer, led the final 26 laps of the 30-lapper while defending champion and current points leader Kevin Kierce finished fifth. Rutherford started the night second in the standings and now trails Kierce 4,385 to 3,595 with five races remaining in the season.
The other winners at Ventura included Jeff Culver (of Lompoc) in the Senior Sprint Cars, Angel Figueroa (El Segundo) in the Pro Dwarf Cars, Kent Benson (Valencia) won the Senior Dwarf Car main, Brandon Reta (Ventura) won the Sport Compacts Rear Wheel Drive feature and Joel Chavez Jr. (Santa Paula) won the Front Wheel Drive race. Brennan Rogers (Camarillo) won the Junior Midgets race while Kyle Peterson (Santa Clarita) won the Mini Dwarfs Pistons race and Ricky Lewis (Oxnard) won the Mini Dwarfs Super Chargers main. David Pankratz (Canyon Country) won the Go Kart final.
Jimmy Crawford (Ventura) led the first four laps of the Sprint Car feature but once Rutherford got the top spot, he did not let go.
Culver led the Senior Sprint Car race from start to finish. Figueroa’s win helped him make up some ground on Pro Dwarf Car leader Ray Estrada, who finished third Saturday. Benson led only the last lap of the Senior Dwarf Car feature.
The two Sport Compact classes race together in the main event. Chavez was the overall winner and Reta won his class while finishing third overall. Pankratz improved his lead, slightly, in the Go Kart class.
Rogers led every lap of the Junior Midget feature. Lewis led the final 11 laps of the Superchargers feature and Peterson led the last seven laps of the Pistons main.
