WHITNEY'S LAST LAP PASS SECURES SKAGIT SPEEDWAY CHAMPIONSHIP #2

ALGER, Washington — Jesse Whitney thrilled the large crowd at Skagit Speedway on season championship night presented by Coach Corral. Whitney secured the season championship merely by taking the green flag on the main, but was determined to finish his season with a win. After stalking Colton Heath for the first 24 laps, Whitney took his RPM Rentals #88 Eagle to the bottom of the track and slid underneath Heath, then held on for dear life as his car wheelied across the line in taking home the win and season championship in the Associated Asphalt 410 Sprints. Heath took second, securing second in the final championship standings in the Sanford Tire & Auto Repair #5x XXX. Third was Barry Martinez in the Advanced Sprint Car & Toys for Trucks #66 J&J. Heath won the scramble.

Shane Broers brought home his second triumph of the year in his Firedown Graphics #11 XXX in the Budweiser 360 Sprints. Brock Lemley, who secured the season championship by taking the green flag in the Kentch Bros #40 XXX, led the initial 4 laps before running into trouble as the left sideboard on his top wing flew off. Lemley would surrender the lead to the 2008 champion Brian Kirkpatrick who held the point from lap 5 to 7 before pulling off the track with mechanical issues. This handed the lead to Broers, who capped his second full year in the 360s with his second main win. Second went to Evan Funk in the Performance RC #18 Rocket. Lemley, after going to the pits for a new top wing, recovered to finish third. Brock also won the scramble.

Kelsey Carpenter's dream season ended on a high note with main event win #10 in the Cook Road Shell Sportsman Sprints. Having secured the season championship weeks prior, Carpenter went for the win early, taking the scramble and leading every lap of the main in his Dri-Eaz #27c XXX. Michael Bollinger reeled Carpenter in a few times, but was unable to pass him, settling for second in his Sunworks Tanning #73 Maxim. Third was Paul Burdick in the Precision Collision #9 XXX.

Ben Gunderson found the right groove to race in late in the 17 lap Outlaw Hornet main event, Storming underneath Tyler Ketchum to take the lead on lap 15 and running out to a sizeable advantage as he took the checkered flag. Second went to Wade Swatzina, third to Cory Swatzina who sewed up the season championship by taking the green flag. Freddy Vela won the scramble.

The 55th anniversary season of Skagit Speedway has come to a close, but the excitement doesn't stop here. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled on www.skagitspeedway.com during the offseason for announcements regarding the 2010 schedule, rules changes, and more!
