EWING DOMINATES METROPCS SUPER LATE MODEL FEATURE AT THE BULLRING AT LAS VEGAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY

LAS VEGAS – Robert Ewing won tonight’s 40-lap MetroPCS Super Late Model feature at the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Ewing built up a full straightaway lead at the halfway point as the second, third and fourth-place cars were held up by heavy lapped traffic and never looked back. Jimmy Parker Jr. finished a distant second and Steve Anderson was third. Ewing, who was the evening’s fastest qualifier, also won the Budweiser MetroPCS Super Late Model Dash.

The red flag flew on lap 24 of the 25-lap Charger feature when the engine in Rick Morales’ car let go in Turn 2 and several cars spun in the oil and crashed. The most serious collateral damage was sustained by Matt Johnson, who was only 17 points behind division leader Phil Goodwin with only one points-paying event remaining in the 2009 season. Also involved were Darren Rollins (who was third in points), 2004 champion Fred Kiser and James Lauk. The feature ended in a green-white-checkered finish with Mario Opipari holding off Vinny Raucci for his first Charger win of the ’09 campaign. Points leader Phil Goodwin finished third. Johnson and Goodwin won Charger heats.

Dallas Simonette won the 25-lap Bomber feature. Larry “The Torch” Dittman finished second and “Big Jim” Sherard was third. Bomber heat races were won by Simonette and Dittman.

Jarod Carpenter won the 25-lap Thunder Roadster feature, followed by Fred Chase and Bob Dresser. Thunder Roadster heats were won by Chase and Carpenter.

Brecken Snow won the Legends Cars feature, halted on lap 21 due to time constraints. Andrew Smith finished second and Mike Abbate was third.

C.J. Tracy won the 15-lap Legends Cars Developmental feature. Patrick O’Hanely finished second and Ian Anderson was third.

The 15-lap Bandolero Bandits feature was won by Kayli Barker. Chris Warren finished second and Christian Glass completed the top three.

Patrick O’Hanley won the 15-lap Bandolero Young Guns feature. Ian Anderson and Michael Morris completed the top three.

Dan Patella won the demolition derby.

Next race: Saturday, Oct. 3. NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Championship Night, featuring MetroPCS Super Late Models, Chargers, Bombers, Legends Cars, Bandoleros and Thunder Roadsters. Spectator gates will open at 5 p.m.
