IRWINDALE, California — Sixteen year-old driver Jeremiah Wagner captured his third ASA Speed Truck victory of the year leading from start to finish here Saturday to win the 100-lap event in front of about 3,000 fans.
Wagner, who averaged 77.091 mph over the half-mile paved oval, finished 0.24 seconds ahead of fellow Las Vegan and teammate Chris Birdsong in the event that featured 18 entries. Both drivers are sponsored by Frazee Paint and Day Dawn Homes of Las Vegas.
Rounding out the top five finishers were Cole Cabrera of Exeter, Calif., Darren Young of Gilbert, Ariz., and Josh Goshen of Riverside.
“I jumped out to the lead early and avoided the late-race accidents,” said Wagner, who excelled in Legends before advancing to the Speed Trucks this season. “Irwindale always has some of the toughest competition in the country, so winning three straight there is especially rewarding.
“This was the longest and toughest race of the year so far.”
Wagner’s next Speed Truck race event is Friday and Saturday at I-10 Speedway in Blythe, Calif.
Wagner’s racing career started in 2001 when he ran go karts at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He has been involved in community service work for LVMS appearing at schools, Nellis Air Force Base, hospitals along with various auto racing facilities.
