YAKIMA, Washington — Portland, Oregon driver Joey Tanner picked a great time to win his first Late Model race on asphalt becoming the youngest person to add his name to the winners list of the Fall Classic at ASA Sanctioned Yakima Speedway. Tanner was the dominate car, leading 172 laps on the afternoon for the win in the 22nd Annual Race.
Tanner overtook the defending champion of the event Mike Longton of Moxee on the 27th lap. There were numerous cautions and race stoppages in the event that saw 39 Late Models take the green flag. Jason Fraser, the winner of the 2009 Apple Cup at Yakima Speedway gave the most serious and sustained challege running second most of the event and starting side-by-side on the double file restarts. But Tanner was the story and the 19 year old pulled away to a one and half second victory in the 200 lap race that ran for 3 hours and 29 minutes. At the end of the race just 12 cars were still running and only four were on the lead lap.
Earlier in the day Saturday, Mel Patnode took over the lead from Chris Van Amburg coming out of turn two on the last racing lap and held on for the final half lap to win the 50 lap Hobby Stock Main Event. Van Amburg, Mike Valcich, Jerry Walker, Jr. and Rob Allen rounded out the top 5 for the 24 car field.
In the Street Stock Main Event, the crowd erupted when winner Mike Easley got out of the car. Easley and Gary Homad dueled in heavy traffic the last 5 laps with Easley coming out on top. A very popular win for the Street Stock driver. Chet Beaman, JC Wofford and Zack Beaman rounded out the top 5.
There were 16 Pro 4’s at the start of the 60 lap Main Event but only nine still running at the end of the race as Rick Thompson won by a margin of 1.2 seconds. Just 3 of those cars still running were on the lead lap. Bud Rumsey finished second and Wayne Dillon was third.
On Saturday afternoon, Naima Lang won the 125-lap Limited Late Model Main Event taking his crate motored car to victory over Garrett Evans and Jason Fraser. 32 cars started the LLM main event.
