Dave Byrd, the 2007 Spears SRL Southwest Tour Champion and holder of fifteen other driving championship titles will appear in tonight’s special “Race of Champions” as well as the Spears SRL Southwest Tour feature event, the NTS, Inc. 125 at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale, in Irwindale, California.
Dave will join four other former and the current reigning series champion for today’s 12 lap “Race of Champions” event. The fan favorite “RoC” is a special added event to tonight’s line up of races and marks the first time six former Southwest Tour champions will race in the same field of cars.
The feature and final event on the night will be the NTS, Inc. 125. Tonight’s feature event is the ninth race of this year’s ten race schedule and has a reported 32 cars entered. Dave currently sits 7th in the series point standings, but with two events left in the season, plans on making a statement to wrap up the year.
Tonight’s racing follows a short one week turn around from the last event. The October 3rd race in Stockton, California had the Action Tools Chevrolet of Dave Byrd qualifying third fast at 13.118 seconds. Dave got to the front of the field and led from lap 52 to lap 68, before being “turned” by the second place car. Although the car received damage in the incident, Dave managed to restart at the rear of the field and race back to finish 9th.
“This car is maintained and prepped for each race by a very dedicated and hardworking crew at Greg Voigt Racing,” explained Dave Byrd. “In a traveling series like this, you really only have a couple of days to repair and prep for the next race. The damage set us back some, but these guys are amazing in what they can get done.”
