DENAIR, California — 2009 Formula Ford Regional Champion Bobby Runyan, Jr. had a strong showing in his first race of the season for Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle in the USAC Ford Focus Midgets, finishing second in the 40 lap feature at Havasu 95 Speedway in Lake Havasu, AZ.
Runyan, who also has experience as a two-time champion in IKF karting, will be competing for both rookie and championship honors in the ambitious USAC Western Pavement Ford Focus Midget Series in 2010.
Runyan began the afternoon by qualifying ninth from a field of 16. Runyan followed up qualifying by claiming the win in his heat race.
In the 40 lap feature that included drivers running for the points in the Western Pavement, SoCal Pavement, and Utah regional series, Runyan quickly moved forward.
With five laps to go, Runyan closed in on his RSWC teammate Eli Schrock. Runyan made a move to the inside on Schrock to set up a four lap side-by-side duel. The two battled it out to the finish on the quarter-mile asphalt oval, with Schrock taking the victory, giving Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle a 1-2 finish.
“Bobby Runyan is the real deal,” driver coach Ron Sutton said. “We are confident he has the talent to go all the way.”
Runyan’s second place finish also gives him second place in the points as the Western series moves on to I-10 Speedway in Blythe, Calif. next Saturday.
