BRIGHTON, Colorado — Fresh off of a trip to Australia to run Modifieds and 600 Micro Sprints, 15 year-old Austin Farley debuted for Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle by winning the USAC Ford Focus Young Guns feature at Havasu 95 Speedway in Lake Havasu, AZ.
Farley has competed in a variety of racing disciplines throughout his young career, but this was his first race in a full-size, suspended USAC Midget racing on a quarter-mile asphalt oval. The accomplished teenager earned a spot with Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle driver development team after turning in a strong performance in the shootout last fall.
When Farley turns 16 in May, he will narrow his attention solely to the USAC Ford Focus SoCal Pavement Series. To get his championship effort in that series started, Farley doubled up by competing in both the Young Gun and SoCal Focus Midget features.
Farley opened up the afternoon by qualifying second in the Young Gun division, followed by a win in his eight lap heat race. In the 15 lap Young Gun feature, Farley wrestled the lead away from Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle teammate Brandon White on lap five. White wasn’t giving up and dogged Farley for most of the race until Farley pulled away in the final laps for the victory.
After winning the Young Gun feature, Farley went out to race in the 16 car Western/SoCal main. Farley ran strong in the 40 lapper, taking home an 11th place finish.
“Austin has showed impressive talent in a short time,” Driver Coach Ron Sutton said. “We are super excited to develop him this year and run for the championship and rookie of the year.”
Farley will compete in both the Young Gun and SoCal USAC Ford Focus Midgets again next week at I-10 Speedway in Blythe, Calif.
Austin Farley and Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle want to thank sponsors K&N Filters, Scribner Plastics, Allstar Performance, Inventory Sales Company, Sunoco Race Fuels and Star Racing Supply.
An all-new Austin Farley website will be launched soon. In the meantime, race fans can go to www.farleymotorsports.net for more information.
