Irwindale , California -- Trevor Huddleston was only 1 year old when Toyota Speedway kicked off their first season of racing. His dad, Tim Huddleston, three time Auto Club Late Model Champion was racing his own car with hopes that his son would one day grow up to race cars too.
When Toyota Speedway kicked off their twelfth season this past Saturday night, Trevor was there racing his High Point Racing Bandolero .
A fourth place qualifying effort left second year driver Trevor Huddleston starting on the outside of the second row, a difficult place to start in the Bando cars who typically hug as close to the bottom of the track as possible. Huddleston’s teammate Brandon Weaver would lead the field to the green flag, but he wouldn’t stay there. When Weaver made a mistake exiting turn two and spun, Huddleston found himself in position to take over the race lead, which he did.
With last year’s Champion, Ricky Schlik in hot pursuit behind him, Trevor approached lapped traffic. As the race director called lapped traffic to move high, the car moved low, directly in Trevor’s racing line. Schlik moved past Huddleston and took the checkered flag. However, as Trevor was watching his dad race in a Super Late Model, he was informed that the #24 of Schlik had not passed post race tech inspection and had been disqualified leaving Trevor the winner.
“Ricky is a really good driver and we raced really hard,” the young Huddleston said on the podium. “I want the same thing to happen next week, but instead this time, I’m going to be in front and Ricky is going to be behind me!”
This is Trevor’s first victory and he already has his goal set on passing his dad for number of wins at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale.
