SELF WINS LATE MODEL FEATURE AT ROSEVILLE AND PREPARES FOR PHOENIX

PARK CITY, Utah — 19 year-old Michael Self won his second career stockcar race by winning the season opening 50 lap feature for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Models at All American Speedway in Roseville, Calif.

The 2010 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Rookie of the Year contender has accumulated an average qualifying of fourth and an average finish of fifth over his eight Late Model starts since September 12th.

The win marked Self’s second career stockcar victory in just 22 starts, since transitioning from karting to full-size NASCAR racing in late 2008.

“The Motorway Motorsports Chevy was awesome,” Self said. “The crew gave us a very good car this weekend.”

Self qualified second fastest over a field of 18 cars in qualifying. An invert of six put him fifth on the starting grid before a crowd of more than 1500 fans.

Driving the Rockwell Timekeepers Chevrolet, Self leaped forward to third by lap 10. At the halfway point in the race, Self engaged Matt Scott in a battle for second. A caution on lap 26 bunched the field up, and Self promptly passed race leader Jonathan Mawhinney.

Self pulled away easily from the pack over a series of late restarts to come under the yellow-checkered flags at lap 43 to end the race as the winner.

Self’s next event in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West is April 8 when the series hits the one-mile Phoenix International Raceway. The rookie driver is looking forward to big things on the fastest track the circuit races at. A field of more than 30 cars is entered for the 100 mile “Jimmie Johnson Foundation 100” around the speedway.

The race opens up the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series weekend of activities at the southwestern venue. It is also the critical second stop on the 12 round West Series, with most teams running the same equipment at both Iowa and Phoenix. A strong run for Self and Motorway Motorsports at Phoenix is critical to preparing for the event in Iowa.

A busy day of action is slated for the Thursday evening affair with practice beginning at 10 a.m., followed by a second practice session, qualifying, and the race slated to begin at 5 p.m. and end around dusk.
