NWWS POINTS LEADER LOOKS TO STAY ON TOP

(May 10, 2001) SAN DIEGO, Ca. The NASCAR Winston West Series points leader, Austin Cameron, does not want to give up his current position in the race for the Championship in the West. A strong run this weekend can help keep him on top, which is where he plans to stay.

This Saturday’s NASCAR Winston West Series Food 4 Less “250” race at Irwindale Speedway will be the 6th of 14 scheduled races in the NWWS and the first of three at Irwindale Speedway, LA’s Fastest ½ mile. The .500-mile paved oval will host 26 cars for the 125 mile event scheduled for an 8:00 pm start time Saturday May 12, 2001. Austin was the pole sitter at Irwindale Speedway for the NWWS 2000 season finale race, which was the third of 3 West races held at the track during the season. Austin is no stranger to the Southern California speedway, he has competed in all five of the NWWS events held at the track since it’s opening, he has sat on the pole and won at Irwindale. “Irwindale Speedway is a great facility and we have done well out here in the past. I won my first West Series race out here and sat on the pole the last race of the 2000 season here”, said Cameron. “Irwindale has been good to me so far!” Austin’s first NWWS win took place at Irwindale Speedway August 21, 1999 after starting the race from the 17th starting position.

Cameron and his #12 AC Motorsports crew spent a day testing at the ½ mile track in preparation for Saturday’s race. “We tested out here at Irwindale last Friday and ran some good times. We did a long run, maybe 50 or 60 laps, and got a good feel for what the car will be like on a long run”, stated Cameron. The team brought 2 cars to the track for the test and narrowed down their best for the race. “It is exciting for the whole team to go into a race weekend leading the points. We all have good momentum and it helps carry you through the event”, said Austin. The team is hoping to have a good run on Saturday with their momentum riding on their side. “Our goal is to finish the race well and remain the points leader going into the next race”, said Cameron. “If we can do that, it will be a good weekend!”####
